Final
Fantasy makes it's PSX debut! Sporting a whole new look, the Final
Fantasy series comes back in yet another increadable game. Not only
did it feature 3D graphics and great music, it weighed in at a whopping
3CDs! Not to mention the spectacular FMVs that played throughout
the game. Taking roughly 60 hours to complete, Final Fantasy VII
is the biggest Final Fantasy yet! I'll bet a *cough* certain company
is really kicking themselves now for letting Square slip out of thier hands.
But hey, who am I to judge*?
| Graphics: /10 | 9 | The backgrounds were great, the movies were even better, the characters looked like walking squares. |
| Characters: /10 | 7 | The characters were all pretty much the same as one another. They just looked different. |
| Plot: /20 | 18 | Great plot, but a little confusing. |
| Music: /10 | 9 | Another great soundtrack here. |
| Other: /10 | 7 | The materia was inventive, it was also annoying. |
| Overal: /20 | 18 | Bundles it all together in one and still manages to blow you away depsite it's flaws. |
PLOT:
The plot to this game was definetly interesting. The main character,
Cloud, is a former member of Shinra's elite warriors known as SOLDIER.
The game starts with him acting as a mercenary and working with a band
of rebles called AVALANCHE. The plot changes after about 4 hours
into the game and becomes a man hunt for the legendary Sephiroth.
The plot has a few minor twists, followed by one giant knot near the end.
I'm not going to give it away for those who haven't played it, but just
know this: things get complicated!
CHARACTERS:
The characters in this game were basically all the same. Sure, they
looked different and acted different, but that was about it. In combat
the only difference was what weapon they used, and slight differences in
stats. But, like in Final Fantasy 3, every character could use every
spell with almost equal skill. In my opinion, this was the games
biggest downfall.
OTHER:
The game introduced Limit breaks, which were pretty cool. What would
happen is that as a character took damage, there LIMIT bar would fill,
and when it finally did fill up, *DING* the whoop-ass was ready!
Some of the better ones include Vincent's ability to change form into some
kind of wicked monster, and Cloud did a lot of fancy swordplay that was
very impressive. The materia system was very similar to the Esper
system, except the orb learned the spell instead of the character.
It's been done before.

OVERAL:
The game made us of the Play Station's many features, but the most
apparant were the 3 CDs and FMVs that were played throughout the game.
They were very impressive, as well as the game itself. Still, all
it really has over the other Final Fantasies is improved graphics.
But hey, if you've got a wining formula, it's probably better not to mess
with it.
