Armored whales have the basic shape of a hunpback whale, however, their skin is thick and plated, and upon their nose is a great horn that resembles that of a rhino. Their coloration is a normally a dark gray, although there have been reported cases of midnight black and snow white armored whales.
The armored whales are completely carnivorous, living on a diet of fish. Though they can remain submerged for upto fifteen minutes at a time, they must surface regularly to breathe. Unlike most mammals, breathing is a conscious, rather than unconscious action; in other words, they literally must remember to breathe. Newborn whales are hornless and must be protectected by the adults of the pod from those that would harm them. Armored whales are good creatures, well respected by the peaceful folk of the sea. They are by nature playful, good-tempered, and lawful good, despising evil creatures. Most roam the oceans in pods, some numbering as large as 15 whales, swimming where their fancy suits them. They never fight among themselves or with other breeds of whales.
Armored whales are highly intelligent and take a benign, distant interest in human doings. They will sometimes help humans in distress, guiding them to the shore and keeping the sharks at bay. Certain solitary whales, known as rogues, have been known to form distant attachments to humans, watching over them from a distance and making sure that no harm befalls their chosen friend.
The armored whale is both a hunter and hunted in its marine world. Sharks and other large evil sea creatures hunt the armored whales with enthusiasm. Despite its many enemies, the whale has many distinct advantages that enable it to survive and even flourish. Not only is it a strong, swift swimmer, but also its intelligence and organized lifestyle are highly effective defenses against its enemies.
Combat:
Like all whales, armored whales are inherently peaceful in nature and will only attack if threatened. This peaceful nature does not extend towards sharks and other natural enemies of the sea. Unlike their smaller cousins, the armored dolphins, they will attack even the giant meglodon sharks that are found in the deep oceans. In combat armored whales attack using their noses as battering rams. This attack is special in that it can harm creatures normally affected by magical weapons. This special attack only harms creatures affected by weapons of +2 enchantment only.
Blindsight (Ex): Armored Whales can "see" by emmiting high-frequency sounds, inaudible to most other creatures, that allow them to locate objects and creatures within 120 feet. A silence spell negates this and forces the whale to rely on its vision, which is approximately as good as a human's.
Skills: Armored whales gain a +4 racial bonus to Spot and Listen checks. *These bonuses are lost if Blindsight is negated.
