ELECTRONIC ARTS HOOKS THE BIG ONE WITH CHAMPIONSHIP BASS FOR THE PLAYSTATION
New Franchise from EA SPORTS Brings Fishing to Life
Redwood City, Calif., March 7, 2000 - It's a sleepy morning on a quiet
lake. The long rays of the sun are just starting to stretch across the
horizon, and the only sounds are chirping birds and the rustle of the wind
in the trees. Suddenly the silence is shattered by the high pitched
whizzing of a fishing reel as a ten-pound monster bass tries to rip your rod
from your hands. The battle is on, and you'll have to rely on skill,
strength, patience and a little bit of luck to bring home the prize in EA
SPORTS Championship Bass(tm) for the PlayStation®.
The struggle to land a trophy bass has been played out countless times in
the wilderness, but now it is also possible to experience it from the
comfort of home. Electronic Arts (ERTS) announced today the shipment of
Championship Bass for the PlayStation. With a "Bass Challenge" mode that
provides level-based scenarios to teach advanced fishing techniques,
Championship Bass prepares the gamer for the big time tournaments that lie
ahead. The PC version of Championship Bass will ship later this month.
Championship Bass is an intricately detailed, highly realistic bass fishing
simulation that incorporates fun arcade-style gameplay. Championship Bass
gives total access to gorgeous looking lakes. Some other games give the
user the choice of several different spots on the lake, but then confine the
user to that area, which can cause the angler to feel trapped in a static
location. In Championship Bass trip, tournament and career modes, the
angler is free to roam and fish anywhere in a true 3D world. Access to the
best fishing spots on the lake is unlimited.
"What we have created in Championship Bass, and the Bass Challenge mode in
particular, is a game that teaches the angler how to succeed," said
executive producer Randy Dersham. "Fishing is much more fun if there is a
lot of action, and Championship Bass provides challenging gameplay with high
quality graphics that keep the gamer involved and excited."
Advanced fish intelligence allows the fish to try and outwit the angler.
The fish in Championship Bass show a wide range of responses to lures,
strike behavior and fight strategies. They also make false attacks on
lures, return attacks and short-strike lunges. Dozens of rod, reel, weight,
lure and color combinations are available to choose from in the game.
There are four ways to play Championship Bass. In the "Bass Challenge"
more than 15 unique scenarios test the skill of an angler. This
arcade-style of gameplay requires that a certain skill be demonstrated and
completed before the user can advance to the next level. In the "Fishing
Trip" mode, the angler enjoys free form fishing and can choose the location
and conditions in which to fish. In "Tournament" mode, the angler competes
against other computer opponents in a tournament setting. Finally, in
"Career" mode, a series of six tournaments are played out leading to the
Championship Bass Classic Tournament, where the ultimate victor is crowned.
Unmatched underwater detail and beauty is in the game. Instead of boring
underwater scenes, the viewer is treated to lakes full of docks, trees,
vegetation, rocks and of course the biggest and best looking bass ever seen.
