Chocobo Breeding

Chocobo's have been with the Final Fantasy series for a long time, enevitably becoming its mascot. These huge peaceful creatures can travel almost anywhere in the world. Their great speed seems to outrun almost any foe. Chocobo's are very adaptable, from the snowy regions, to the sunny beaches.

How to capture a chocobo

First off you need to go to the Chocobo Farm and buy a "Chocobo Lure Materia". After that rent at least one stable (They're 10,000 gil each). Equiped the materia and walk around where you see the chocobo tracks untill you get into a fight. When you find a chocobo, kill the surrounding monsters without hurting the chocobo. Use a few greens on the chocobo (anything you can buy at the Chocobo Farm) to keep it preoccupied while you finish off the monsters. Don't attack the chocobo or it will go haywire and run away. After you capture the chocobo you can send it to the Chocobo Farm.

Location & Mood

There are seven moods a chocobo can be in

Wonderful - "This is a wonderful Chocobo!"
Great - "This is a great Chocobo."
Good - "Mmm, this seems like a good Chocobo"
Above Average - "Mmm, this one’s not bad"
Average - "This is a pretty average Chocobo"
Poor - "This one doesn’t seem to be very good"
            Weak - "I can’t recommend this one"

It might take a few attempts to get what kind of chocobo you are looking for, but here are the places you can get the ones you need.

Near Mideel: Great

Near the Gold Saucer: Good

On the Northern Continent: Wonderful

There are many different types of greens you can feed you're chocobos. Many can be perchased from the chocobo farm and many other places. Its best to give your chocobos the greatest food possible. That ensures you get the greatest chocobo possible.

All I know is that the Sylkis Greens are the best.

Chocobo Food (Nuts)

There are also special nuts used to breed chocobos. The better the nut, the better the chocobo. It may be expensive, but its worth it in the end.

Pepio Nut - 100 gil (Chocobo Farm)
Luchille Nut - 200 gil (Chocobo Farm)
Saraha Nut - 400 gil (Chocobo Farm)
Lasan Nut - 600 gil (Chocobo Farm)
Pram Nut - 1500 gil (Chocobo Sage)
Porov Nut - 2000 gil (Chocobo Sage)
Karob Nut - Steal these from the red dragon creature near Bone Village.
Zieo Nut - Steal these from the goblins on Goblin Island.

Racing

Besides feeding your chocobos the best food, it is essential to race them to make them even better. The only place you can do this is the Gold Saucer. All chocobos start of in "C" class and can continue through B, A, and the special class "S". The higher the rank, the faster the compatition. Sometimes there is a mysterious chocobo racer that pops up in some of the races. If you see him, then you'll most likely loose, that is unless you have a well taken care of Golden Chocobo. Racing "rank" also helps you get the chocobo you want when breeding them.

The Golden Chocobo

This is the reason why many people take the time to raise and train their chocobos. The Golden Chocobo (also known as the Ocean Chocobo) is the fastest and most adaptable chocobo of them all. It can travel over mountains, lakes, and even the ocean. This chocobo can takes you all over the world.

What to do

First off, you should go out and steal a few Karob Nuts and Zieo Nuts. If you haven't rented all six chocobo stables, now is the time to do it. Now capture at least a "Good" male and female chocobo. Once back at the Chocobo Farm, save your game. The results of breeding are random, so its best to save before breeding. If you don't get what you want, you can reset and try again.

Once you have saved, use the Zieo Nut to breed the chocobos. If all goes well then you should have either a blue (river) or green (mountain) chocobo. You should now let the parents rest and go race the newborn for a while untill it gets to at least rank "B".

Once the other chocobo's are rested you should save and then breed them again. This time you need a different colored chocobo of the opposite sex. Example: If you already bred a male blue chocobo, you need a female green chocobo. This might take a while to get the one you want so be patient. Once hatched, race this one to at least rank "B" as well. Now return to the chocobo farm and save again.

Use yet another Zieo Nut to breed the blue and green chocobos. If the results are good, the offspring should be a black (mountain/river) chocobo. You need to race the black chocobo to rank "S". Once that is done, and you have the airship handy, go to the nothern continent. There should be some chocobo tracks in the snow. This is the best place to get a "Wonderful Chocobo". One you have captured one of the opposite sex of the Black Chocobo you have, you need to race it up to rank "S" as well. Your almost done now. You just have to save and breed your Black and Wonderful chocobos together. If all goes well, you'll end up with a Gold Chocobo.
