FINAL FANTASY II

Final Fantasy 2 was a whole new experience for North American gamers.  Actually being the 4th in the series, we missed out on the 2nd and 3rd.  We jumped right ahead to greatly improved 16 bit graphics, incredible music, a whole bunch of new classes and an amazing plot.  To the left you will see a blurry screen shot of the Bahamut summon spell.  Sorry but after searching the web for several days, this was the best I could come up with.  If you know of a better picture,  e-mail  me please.

Graphics: / 10 8 The graphics of this game were a great improvement over FF1's 8 bit technology.
Characters: / 10 10 Each character was very different from the others and had their own class and personality.
Plot: / 20 17 The plot was much more complex than other games of its time.  It had a good story line with a few twists thrown in.
Music: / 10 8 Who could ever forget the first time they ever heard the Chocobo music?
Other: / 10 8 This game offered a lot more variety over FF1.
Overall: / 20 18 Although it was one of the first RPGs for SNES, it remained one of the best through out the years.

TOTAL:  69/80

PLOT:  The game starts with the main character, the Dark Knight Cecil, commanding a fleet of airships known as the Red Wings as they prepare to assault Mysidia, the Wizards town.  They steal the Crystal of Water from them, but Cecil begins to question the Kings reason behind this.  When he confronts the King about this, he is dismissed from his post as Commander of the Red Wings and is assigned elsewhere.   I don't want to give away too much to those who haven't played it yet, so I'll just stop now by saying it is one of the better plots in an RPG and has a few interesting twists.

CHARACTERS:  This game had a big improvement in this area.  Not only did the characters have more classes, but they all had personalities!!  They interacted with each other and responded to different situations.  The new classes were great, too.  They were the Dark Knight, Dragoon, Caller, Bard, Engineer and Ninja.  While some of these were introduced in earlier Final Fantasies, it was the first time the North American players got a chance to see them.

OTHER:
There were no other RPGs for the SNES at the time so it is difficult to compare it with other games of its time.  It did offer many new features that no other game had at its time, but that is too be expected from a 16 bit game over an 8 bit one.  It took a winning formula from FF1 and improved it in every way.

OVERALL:  This game was spectacular.  I loved it.  You can play it over and over and never get tired of it.  The graphics, sound, and story all blend together to make one of the best RPGs of all time.  A must play game.
