Alana's Newbie Tips

If you have already started, or if you are thinking about starting a character in Angalon, this is the place for you! I warn you that once you start playing Angalon, you will not be able to stop. I don't say that only because I have become addicted. My game-husband, Wolf, and my real-life sister, whose Angalon character is named Velvet, have also become addicted! Now that you have been forewarned, read on! Angalon is a great place to become addicted! :)

Character Mechanics
The first time you log on to Angalon, you will be asked for a charcter name and a password. Think about a good name for a medieval-type realm. Don't use inappropriate names, or you will be quickly banished. Also make sure your password is something only you know. If others can log on as your character, they could seriously ruin things for you!
Pick a race that you like. There aren't really very many differences between the races. When you first start, your statistics may be a little different depending on your race, but these are easily changed. Also be aware that humans, orcs, and hobbits are the only races to have race guilds.
You will the get asked some questions about your appearance, whether you'd like to be tall, short, fat, skinny, or something inbetween. This has absolutely no bearing on your actual character, it is merely for appearance. The same goes for the two traits you get to pick. Pick something you like, as everyone who sees you and doesn't know your name will see you as that forever, but don't worry too much. It's only for show.
Then you come to the skills part. As I said before, make sure you put a good amount of improvement into a weapon so that you are able to fight monsters. The rest of the skills are up to you individually. Don't fret too too much. Skills are always available to learn and improve.
Getting Started
On your first log-in, you will be put in Town Square in the town of Angalon. This is the normal starting point for most people. Some choose to change it to their guild when they join, but many people remain starting in Angalon because it is so convenient. Angalon has pretty much everything. Here is a list of what's around and how to get there from the starting point:

Adventuring
A few tips for general exploration of Angalon:
EXAMINE!
Always read the room description very carefully. Often there will be something that catches your eye. Like a barrel in the corner or something. An object that does not appear vital to the room. Examine these things!
Also examine your enemies! Before attacking, examine that monster. Many times the description of it will let you get a general idea of how tough the monster is. You will also be able to see if he has armour or weapons on him. If the description is written so that the monster sounds too tough for you, he might just be. Obviously, as you gain experience and skills, tougher things might get to be in your range, but in the beginning, always trust those descriptions.
SEARCH!
After you are finished examining all the strange objects in a room, search them. You may find treasure, you may find a monster, you may find nothing, but it's a good idea to try searching if you think there might be a secret.
MAKE FRIENDS!
When you enter a room and there is a player there, introduce yourself! Hunting with a party is a very good idea for newbies. Make friends with everyone! When you hunt with someone else, you can collectively kill tougher things and gain more experience. One of the wonderful things about Angalon is the friendly atmosphere. I have tried many other MUDs and not stuck with any of them because of that simple fact. On Angalon, everyone says hello. Even if you just say hi and wave and leave, its enough. On other MUDs its every player for himself and no one is willing to help anyone else. Angalon is the other end of the spectrum. It is not unusual to see experienced players handing out money and weapons to friends. So introduce yourself! Say hello! Make friends! Angalon is a happy family of players. And most people will be only too happy to help you out if you have problems, so please don't hesitate to ask questions!

If you encounter serious problems and you can't find help, go to the post office and send some mail. If its a game problem, like a bug, mail the council. But if you just have a question, mail Alana. I'll do everything I can to help you. Or you can e-mail me at shancody@hotmail.com

HOPE TO SEE YOU IN ANGALON!!
