Canterbury's Mark Mayerhofler will make his test debut on Saturday week after he was named at centre in the All Black side to take on England at Carisbrook, Dunedin.

Including Mayerhofler, there are six potential new test caps in the squad of 24, with Todd Blackadder, Mark Robinson, Caleb Ralph and Carl Hoeft named in an expanded reserves.

In addition, Counties-Manukau flier Joeli Vidiri could also make his test debut after being bracketed on the left wing with team-mate Jonah Lomu, who is under an injury cloud.

The three selectors, John Hart, Gordon Hunter and Ross Cooper, have also named Lomu on the wing for the New Zealand A team to take on England on Saturday night in Hamilton.

Auckland halfback Ofisa Tonu'u and Otago hooker Anton Oliver will make their first test starts after both had spells in the reserves in the past.

The selectors have also confirmed the worst kept secret in world rugby, with Otago No.8 Taine Randell named to captain the test side.

They have also picked veteran Auckland lock Robin Brooke as vice-captain. That move, they say, is designed to lessen the load on Randell as the professional era has brought about increased demands on the All Black captain, not only in team leadership, but also in media, sponsorship and promotional requirements.

While the selectors are confident Brooke will get over his hamstring injury in time for the test, they have added cover by naming nine reserves, including North Harbour lock Blair Larsen. Two of the nine will be omitted before the match.
