Priest of Palan

Alas, I grieve for the failure of my homeland to grasp the evils of their ways. Alas, I grieve for the fate of its people, driven by greed and mistrust. Alas, I grieve for myself, an outcast from my own home, a wanderer through lands strange and mystical. Alas, I grieve.

I am but a man, a single soul cast in an unlikely role following an unusual path on a foreign world. Years ago, on my world of Gokuraku, now known as Marketplace, those who came before me watched as the people lost their way, lost contact with their heritage, and lost hope for the future. The MegaCorporations preyed on the populace, offering them visions of contentment and happiness through wealth and possessions. As the power of the MegaCorps grew, so did their effects on the land. Drought, disease, pollution, and famine spread across the planet. Those who sold themselves to the MegaCorps were given homes, food, and shelter. Others knew envy, and offered themselves also to the MegaCorps. In the span of only a few generations, the MegaCorps controlled the great majority of the population, and had spread their holdings to cover the land and seas. The people had sold away their souls, even lost their names, in exchange for a number and material things.

Some of the people, merely a handful, foresaw the dangers of the Corporate path, and turned away. We found stories buried in antiquity of a kindred spirit, Palan, whose message of spirituality and poverty rang with truth and inspired us to rise above the material world. We spurned the numbers, greed, and callousness which was fostered by the Corporate Masters, took names for ourselves, and went into the land with only a white robe and staff as trappings of our stations. We search for those things which cannot be purchased - love, memories, visions, and peace.

Such purity of purpose offended the one known as 3327, head of Ursan Industries. When he sent his security forces to slaughter hundreds of Palanic followers, his true nature was revealed. I and the other survivors of the massacre have vowed revenge against him and his Corporate agenda. On Gokuraku, my Order seeks to undermine the power of 3327 by destroying his holdings. We learned of his use of "maelstrom bridges" to find new markets, and we strove to prevent him from spreading his greed to other lands. Three of these "bridges" have already been destroyed. I chose to follow another path. I followed as Ursan Industries sent this new "bridge" to the land called Earth. It is here where I hope to find revenge on 3327 and stop his destruction.

In this strange land, I have found myself torn in many directions and learning that there are many truths under the great Truth. I have fought alongside armor clad brutes wielding swords, women with guns, cyborgs, and even lizard-men with spears. I have seen wizards pull flames from air. I have flown with no aircraft to support me. My link with Nature and the Spirits has grown stronger as I have stayed in this land.

Even so, the cold steel of a firearm against the small of my back reminds me that I carry more than the robe and staff my Order permits; reminds me that the strangeness of this land has changed me in subtle ways. I find myself drawn into the struggle of this world - not only against the pox of Marketplace, but against all the invaders who hope to rend its innocence in the name of greed. In helping the people of Earth, I complete my vengeance against 3327 and also serve a greater Good and a greater Truth.

Although my years of training in the martial arts have served me well, there are limits to the effect I can have on an armored foe using only a staff, as is customary in my Order (explaining my illicit possession of a gun). It is my increasing communion with the Spiritual realm which has made me most useful in this quest for justice. I am often ignored or overlooked by foes (and my peers), which allows me freedom to accomplish more subtle (or less violent) tasks. As with nature, where the river gradually wears away the mountain, where the wind slowly changes the landscape, it is my goal that, in small ways, I can affect the course of this war.
