Zanagan's Guide to Wizardry

'Raven' of Wizards

Note: This guide is written to benefit adventurers in Gemstone 3. I have no association with Simutronics, therefore everything written here is opinion. Take this information for what it is worth'I think you will be happy with the results however ;).

Greetings my name is Zanagan Drakenwolf and I write this guide for your benefit! I have been playing Gemstone for about two years now, and have created a character in every profession and race. I've read guides for all professions and for all other aspects of the game. I like to consider myself an educated adventurer! You will benefit the most if you compare this guide with others like Dartaghan's, Frescalus', Gringo's, Tenser's, Allamon's, Soltarius', and Brila's. Read these guides and think to yourself how do I want to make my wizard? I've read them all and agreed and disagreed on what some have to say. However, I highly recommend Lord Frescalus' guide. I took a little advice from most of these guides and I am pleased with the outcome of my wizard. Although I am only level 14 (at the time of this writing), I believe that what I have to say is accurate, and that most fellow wizards would agree with much of what I have to say. Please respect my advice and take it for what it is worth'

The first step in the development of your character is the dreaded character manager. There is no way around it'one must suck it up and be prepared to sit, and maintain sanity while watching numbers for hours. What do I mean by this? Well in order to mold your wizard into something worth playing you need good stats. The character manager gives you ten numbers, which can range from 20-100

The first 3 numbers range from 50-90
The next numbers range from 40-60
The next numbers range from 20-50
The final number ranges from 20-100

Good stats are key!!! This is what I consider good stats...first three in the 80 range, next three in the 50 range, the next three in the 40 range, and the last number in the 90's. I personally would never settle for a total of less than 640. This total may take quite a few aggravating hours of rolling or if your lucky you might get it on your first few rolls. It's all the luck of the draw. Now one must figure out where to place those rolls, be patient don't get so excited over your rolls that you make a mistake in stat placement! This is how I recommend you place your stats.

DI, DE, AU, RE, ST, LO, WI, IT, CH, CO

These are my stats at level 0...

As you may have noticed I didn't exactly follow my recommendation for stat placement. That is only because of the numbers I got in the character manager. I just needed to make a few changes. I am quite happy with these rolls. My only concern is I feel that my wisdom is a tad slow considering that it is a slow growing stat for wizards, but I have been able to manage fine so far. If you're wondering about those bonus numbers, well those have a huge impact on the game. The higher the stat then the better the bonus will be. The bonuses are usually the numbers that are involved in during game play, such as attack strength, defense strength, evading e-wave attacks and things like that. Bonuses are also affected by race. Here is a table showing the affects races have on stat bonuses...

Personally I like the Halfling for a wizard but I didn't like the fact that they can't hold much, so I chose the Half Elf. I like how they have no negatives in strength and aura, and how a reflexes is +10 and dexterity is +5. Half Elves and Halflings are my personal recommendations. Dark Elves make great wizards as well, but the annoyance about them to me is the slow spirit point gain. Choose the race that fits you.

Now that stat placement is completed it is time for training! Training for wizardry is pretty hard because there are a lot of directions you can go. This is how I feel a wizard should train...

1x Edged Weapons
1x Shield Use
1x Magic Item Use
2x Spell Aiming
1x Scroll Reading
2x Spells'Wizard Circle to 20, and Minor Elemental to 11'then I would switch to Major Elemental until I got disk, then I would continue through the Minor Elemental Circle. Chose the path that you think will most benefit you.
1x Mana Sharing
1x Physical Training
1x First Aid
1x Switch between Swimming and Climbing (only when you have the points.)
1x Armor Use (when you get the chance'try to train in this 4 times to be able to wear full leather penalty free.)

Again, you will not be able to fit all this stuff in every level...you know what you need to do'always think a few levels ahead'Should I train in this? Or should I train in it later? Those are the questions you should be asking yourself. I highly stress mana sharing more than some others'it is expensive at 7 mental points a pop but it is a real luxury if not a necessity for later on in life.

Now that you have completed training you need to characterize your wizard and choose a name. Please choose something medieval and original. Nothing worse then when someone tries copying a name that has already been chosen. For example, Herkules'your not fooling anyone.

You should be in the lands now, hopefully Wehnimer's Landing. I feel my job is done here. It is up to you to find your niche in the lands, experience things for yourself don't always take what people say as gospel. Welps, I hope this guide has been informative to you. Everything here has helped me through my first 14 years. Hope to see you in the lands! Give me a nudge once and awhile, I'm always dazed out!
