Degeneration

Hey all... Well, someone asked me, the other day, how it was that my character, Rushelle, had gotten into so much trouble. It brought to my attention the fact that many don't know about or don't understand degeneration rolls... Hence, the topic of today's tutorial...

Newly embraced vampires tend to uphold a certain degree of moral conduct, retained from prior to their embrace. Some older vampires are able to hold on to their humanity but this is rare as the time slips past. You see, vampires are hunters. Vampires are killers. Vampires are, to some degree or another, monsters. At some point, no matter how "nice" the vampire is; he or she WILL kill...even if it is accidental, it may affect the kindred's humanity.

Based on their starting humanity, a vampire has a certain idea of what is right and what is wrong. A vampire with a humanity of 8, for instance, is more "human" than most humans themselves. This vampire is a goodie two shoes; causing injury to anyone (whether it is an accident or not), goes against what they feel is "right" and forces them to make a conscience roll (diff 8). Failing this roll means that the slip down one level on the humanity scale, bringing the vampire's beast closer to the surface. Botching this roll means they not only lose a dot in Humanity but also a dot in conscience.

Below, I have listed the Heirarchy of Sin. In order to find where you currently stand on this, match your humanity rating with the number on the list. If you have a humanity 6 vampire, she will not have to roll conscience if she commits the 7,8,9, or 10 sin... Only 6 or lower.

10: Selfish thoughts
9: Minor selfish acts
8: Injury to aother (accidental or otherwise)
7. Theft
6: Accidental Violation (drinking a vessel dry out of starvation.)
5. Intentional property damage.
4. Impassioned violation (manslaughter or killing while frenzied).
3. Planned violation (outright murder)
2. Casual violation (thoughtless killing)
1. Utter perversion or heinous acts.
