Story: Johnny Cage was a martial arts star in Hollywood with fame gained from his movies Sudden Death, Dragon Fist and its sequel. Trained by martial arts masters from all over the world, Cage, real name John Carlton, was top of the charts of 1993. Then he was accused of being a fake. Under serious media pressure, he boarded the boat that went to the secluded isle on which the tournament would begin.
Cage met Kano on the boat and the two got into a short quarrel, which was split up by Liu Kang. Liu Kang befriended the superstar and taught him the magical arts, and Cage found ways to channel his energies to create fireballs and confuse his opponent with shadowy replicas of himself on the battlefield.
Cage was one of the seven surviving fighters of Mortal Kombat; Goro, Shang Tsung, and their troops had seen to the murder of every other combatant. Then Liu Kang defeated Goro and Shang Tsung and saved the earth, as well as redeemed John's reputation by inspiring the superstar to do the only thing he could do.

Mortal Kombat, a movie directed by, written by, and starring Johnny Cage, began filming in the spring of 1994. Unfortunately, while on the set of the movie, he disappeared. Little did the media or the public know, Liu Kang had gone into the Outworld, and with him, Cage had followed.
Johnny began to realize the full extent of what was going on as he fought a newfound enemy, Shao Kahn, in his own realm, the Outworld. Shang Tsung had just been one of Kahn's minions. Now, with an army of Outworlders, some savage, some grotesque, and some stunningly beautiful, Kahn waged war against the oncoming band of Earth warriors.
Cage, Liu Kang, and their allies barely escaped with their lives. Inspired once again, Cage returned to the set of Mortal Kombat, saying that he had had an inspirational meeting with his Chinese friend Liu Kang, which was true enough.
Cage finished Mortal Kombat and, with its immediate success, went on to create Mortal Kombat II. When it was complete, Cage went to work writing a script for Mortal Kombat III, thinking that Kahn had been pacified and now there was nothing left to fear. Then the invasion began.

Cage immediately recognized the portals that appeared over Los Angeles and other cities and set out to find Liu Kang and enlist his guidance. However, on his journey, Sindel was reborn and the soul of every creature fell forfeit to Kahn. But Cage survived. Not entirely sure why, he continued his trek towards Kang, only to fall to the hands of the extermination squads of the Outworld.

But that didn't stop him. It was the portal that blocked his journey to a higher existence; his soul reentered his body and he was free to fight alongside his Earthen comrades. He lived to see Shao Kahn's fall. And with it, the earth reverted to normal and every soul was returned. Unfortunately, when the portal dissipated, his soul left his body dead to voyage into a higher being.
Two years later, Cage sees his Earth friends involved in the struggle of Shinnok and Edenia. Cage turns to his friend and god Rayden to revive him so that he can fight Shinnok's army and help the Elder Gods overcome the Fallen God.
