Story: Kano was part of a top secret band of cutthroat assassins and thieves known as the Black Dragon. The Black Dragon was also top priority on the American government's hit list. Special Forces Lieutenant Sonya Blade, under commands from Major Jackson Briggs, hunted Kano down as fast as she could.

Kano, trying to reach a boat tour to get off the mainland, found that he was too late and the tour had departed, but he did manage to hop aboard a departing personal boat. Kano got into a quarrel with Johnny Cage, and after Liu Kang split it up, he went into seclusion until they arrived at their destination.
Kano wasn't quite sure what they were doing, but, armed with a knife and a cybernetic aiming device on the right side of his face, Kano fought savagely in this "tournament," and, because of his ruthlessness, was one of the seven surviving fighters, one of which he found, to his dismay, to be Sonya.
Liu Kang defeated Goro, who disappeared, and his master, Shang Tsung. Infuriated by his defeat and possibly his execution, Tsung decided to bring some prizes back for his master, Shao Kahn. His prizes were Kano and Sonya.
Unheeding to his pitiful pleas for mercy, Shao Kahn displayed Kano in chains alongside Sonya in his courtyard. Kano and his arch-enemy watched the ensuing battle helplessly.

When the earth-warriors distracted Kahn, Jax, the nickname for Major Briggs, freed them both, as long as Kano agreed to turn himself in after they escaped. Of course he agreed, but after being freed, escaped on his own.
After the invasion left everyone in sight dead, Kano went on a looting rampage, but didn't get very far. An extermination squad, led by Motaro himself, attacked Kano. Not very well armed, Kano defended himself as best he could, and slew several centurians. Motaro was impressed with the human's talents and approached him, asking if he thought servitude to Shao Kahn sounded appealing. In the present situation, he, of course, said yes.
Kano became the Earthen Tactical Advisor and began to teach the Outworld army how to use Human weapons.

With his new arsenal, Kano plotted to escape the thankless task Kahn had set for him. With Kahn and his troops distracted by the sudden attack of the humans, Kano decides to take the power of all the souls for himself. Unfortunately, he was unprepared for the utter savagery of the souls. They slaughtered him.
