Story: When Kahn took over Edenia, the wise men of Asia took steps to make sure that their world did not suffer the same, dark fate. They created a tournament known as Mortal Kombat and held it once each generation. If Kahn and his people were to win the tournament ten times in a row, they could enter earth.
Shang Tsung, a sorcerer, entered the tournament and immediately took the title of grand champion by taking up the grotesque ceremony of sapping his victims' souls. At nine generations later, Tsung still held the title, but, becoming overconfident, was beaten by Kung Lao the Great.

Kung Lao held the title for several generations, when, after the mysterious death of one of the tournament masters, Shang returned, weakened and prematurely aged, and with the four-armed, half-dragon Shokan prince, Goro.
Goro defeated Kung Lao and Shang Tsung sapped his soul.
Nine generations down Kung Lao's line, a child, named after the great, began to train as a Shaolin monk, and took up the practice of wielding a razor-tipped hat. He later left the fold to join the White Lotus society alongside Liu Kang. Kung Lao never married, making him the Great Kung Lao's last descendant.
In 1994, Kung Lao realized what a threat the Outworld was after Baraka's attack on the Shaolin Temples. He reunited with his long time friend, Liu Kang, and together they ventured into the Outworld to neutralize its threat entirely in Kahn's own Mortal Kombat.
Although he had never been faced with the Outwordlers first-hand before, Kung Lao fought valiantly. Accompanied by Liu Kang, the Lin Kuei Sub-Zero, Rayden, and the FBI agent Jax, they battled the Outworld forces of Shang Tsung, Kintaro, Kitana, Reptile, Jade, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Baraka, and finally, Shao Kahn.
But Kung Lao and his friends were warned by Rayden of Kahn's true intentions and escaped with the horrid knowledge that logic provided: Kahn was preparing for a frontal invasion.

Kung Lao and Liu Kang immediately went to work reforming the White Lotus society. But that quickly came to an abrupt halt when the invasion began. Together, Liu Kang and Kung Lao made plans to confront Kahn and end his reign of terror forever.
Kung Lao and Liu Kang survive the attacks of Motaro's extermination squads and finally confront Kahn. But just before entering the heart of the fortress, Kung Lao took a fireball from Kahn to the chest. In his "dying" breath, he makes Liu Kang promise to oversee the final oblivion of Shao Kahn. Through his tears, Kang accepted the vow, and Kung Lao went limp in his arms. Kang flew against Kahn and destroyed him a fiery blaze of rage with the help of the other Chosen Warriors. He returns to Earth to mourn the death of Kung Lao. Or so they think . . .

Kung Lao was mortally wounded in his battle with Kahn, but managed to pick up his broken body and flee the fortress before its final destruction. He knew that the other Chosen Warriors would assume he was dead, and was glad. He had seen enough blood shed in his life, and now he wanted to pursue a spiritual life instead of the warrior's.
However, he soon received word that the battle in Edenia against Shinnok was going downhill. He sadly picked up his bladed hat once again and set out to face off against the ultimate enemy.
Having healed his wounds, Kung Lao adds himself as a deadly weapon to the arsenal of the Earth Warriors. But only time will tell if his forsaking of a peaceful life was all in vain. |
