Story: Spread throughout Japan; the Ninja existed as the Lin Kuei's Japanese counterpart. It is believed that a renegade, Japanese-born Lin Kuei warrior named Takeda developed the art of Ninjutsu hundreds of years ago. He returned to Japan to offer his services and knowledge to various lords and generals during that country's feudal period. Many of his skills and techniques were soon copied and learned throughout his homeland. Although the art of Ninjutsu is not based on an individual warriors mutated power, the ninja made up for it with their use of weapons and collective magical techniques that most humans could master with enough practice.
The Ninja have never existed as one collected clan. They work as a loosely connected spy network, made up of several small clans. One such clan is known as the Shirai Ryu. Their founder was Takeda himself, making the Shirai Ryu the very first ninja clan. This also made them instant foes of the Lin Kuei and made Takeda a target for assassination. But, he managed to elude his attackers until his elder years, when he died not from a vicious battle, but in his sleep- a victim of poison slipped into his tea.

A shuriken master, Hanzo Hasashi, member of the Shirai Ryu, code named Scorpion, had been repeatedly told by his father not to enlist in this organization, but the temptation to afford his wife and children the very best in life. In 1983, he received a mission to retrieve the sacred Map of Elements from the Shaolin monks, who lived in China; Lin Kuei territory.
Upon arriving at the temples and stealing the map, Scorpion met a rival Lin Kuei, Sub-Zero, who also was there to steal the map. Sub-Zero ripped out the ninja's head and spine, took the map and fled the temples.
Scorpion fell into the pits of Hell, where he made a deal, he could return to kill Sub-Zero but never see his family again. Scorpion agreed and returned to the earth realm, stalking Sub-Zero.
Ten years after Scorpion's death, Sub-Zero entered the tenth Mortal Kombat under Outworld rule. Scorpion followed.
While in the heat of Mortal Kombat, Scorpion killed Sub-Zero. With that accomplished, he left the tournament.

A year later, Scorpion learned that Sub-Zero was going into the Outworld. Frustrated, he followed, curious as to why this ninja could be living. He learned that this was Sub-Zero the Sixth, the original Sub-Zero's younger brother. Yearning for repentance, he vowed to protect the younger Sub-Zero. But, knowing that what he had wanted was accomplished, he returned to Hell.

After the invasion of Earth, Shao Kahn decided that he needed more power, and tried, unsuccessfully, to steal the souls from Hell. Upon doing so, he created a small portal that Scorpion found and escaped through. At first a wildcard, who could go either way in battle, Scorpion sided with Kahn after he was promised to be resurrected.
Upon learning that one of his enemies was Sub-Zero, the very same who he had vowed to protect, Scorpion despairingly betrayed Kahn and sided with the Inworld forces. With his support coming out from under him, Kahn fell to the Earth forces, and with his death, the portals closed and Scorpion returned to Hell.

Shinnok was ruler of the Netherealm. With that rule came dominion over Hell as well. Quan Chi sought out Scorpion two years after the invasion and informed the ninja that his family had been brutally murdered and that, if he would side with Shinnok in the war against the Elder Gods, he would not only have his revenge but his life as well. In a rage, Scorpion sided with Quan Chi and Shinnok and vowed to destroy the one who killed his wife and child: Sub-Zero.
