Story: Thousands of years ago, Shao Kahn led an army which had no realm to call their own. The civilized world known as Edenia was ripe for the picking, however. Kahn acquired a free roaming, Earth born sorcerer named Shang Tsung and enlisted his aid in Edenia's takeover.
The fall of Edenia was swift. Shao Kahn's troops ravaged the defense, and he killed King Jerrod himself. He asked Sindel, the queen, to be his bride, but she refused. Then Kahn grabbed her daughter, Kitana, and held a knife to her throat. For obvious reasons, the queen was forced to comply. He robbed the land of its energies, transforming it into what would be known as the Outworld and married Sindel.
But it was not to be. Several weeks later, Sindel had been driven mad at the prospect of ruling by Kahn's side, and she took her own life. Kahn was so infuriated that he had Shang Tsung, who now led his Shadow priests, capture her soul and imprison it, so that she might not ever be allowed reunion with Jerrod but also as a reminder to Kitana of where her loyalties stood.
A rebellion was soon girded up by an Edenian general. Kahn quickly put a stop to it and had his son trained as an assassin. His son was named Rain.
To further ensure Kitana's fealty to him, Shao Kahn had Shang Tsung create a deformed clone of Kitana named Mileena. Mileena feigned being Kitana's twin sister. With the position of princess, Mileena was able to keep a close watch on Kitana, always informing Tsung and Kahn of her "sister's" actions.
Another Edenian child, Jade, was trained from childhood to be a soldier. She quickly exhibited her talent as a tracker and rose to a respectable position at Kahn's side. Then Kahn discovered Earth.

The Shaolin of Earth soon received visions of Edenia's unfortunate fate and quickly constructed a Shaolin tournament to ensure they would not suffer the same destiny. Mortal Kombat was the name of the tournament, and it was held once each generation. If Kahn won it ten times in a row, he would be free to do with the Earth as he wished without interference from Rayden, the Earth's protecor.
Shang Tsung entered the tournament, and with his savage fighting style, he quickly rose to become champion, stealing the souls of his victims to impress his master.
It was several generations later that Kung Lao the Great arrive and defeated Tsung. He became the new champion and reigned that position for several more generations.
Then Tsung returned, aged and with the Shokan Prince Goro. The Shokan were an Outworld race, and Kahn himself had approached Goro on this matter. That half-dragon was only too eager to comply. He killed Kung Lao and Tsung sapped his soul. It was then that the tournament was corrupted; alienated from its creators, the Shaolin.
Goro reigned for nine generations as Mortal Kombat Champion.
It was near this time that Shang Tsung met another free roaming sorcerer named Quan Chi . . .
Quan Chi worked for Shinnok, the mysterious fallen Elder god who now ruled the Netherealm. Shinnok continually sought out the sacred amulet that would give him the power to enter the Earth Realm freely. This amulet had been created millennia ago. Rayden had entombed it in the Himalayas to ensure its secrecy. It was guarded by the four elemental gods, Fire, Water, Earth, and Fujin of Wind.
If Shinnok took Sindel's soul, tainted it with evil, and made it able to be reborn on Earth, Shang Tsung would reveal the location of the Temple of Elements. This knowledge was revealed to him when he took Kung Lao's soul.
Ten years later, in 1993, Shang Tsung and Goro began the tenth, most crucial tournament. But Goro fell to Liu Kang and disappeared.
Kahn was enraged at Shang Tsung's failure, but all was not lost. Shang Tsung convinced him to let him live. He also reminded him of Shinnok's task, and that it was nearing an end, and they could formulate a tournament of their own to get the Chosen Warriors out of the way.

So Shao Kahn set out to make sure the Chosen Warriors would come to the tournament. To lure Liu Kang back, he sent Baraka to destroy the Shaolin Temples. This also brought Kung Lao, the last descendant of the Mortal Kombat Champion.
He already had Kano and Sonya Blade, which would lure a newcoming Chosen Warrior called Jax. As usual, Rayden appeared to intervene, and fought in the tournament. Johnny Cage followed Liu Kang, and Sub-Zero the Sixth came to finish his brother's job by killing Shang Tsung.
The tournament that ensued passed with little incident. The Humans left unscathed and so did his warriors. Then Shinnok returned the soul of Sindel to Kahn.
The invasion of Earth began then. Kahn stole the soul of everything in the realm, everything but the Chosen Warriors. To rectify that, he sent Motaro to lead the extermination squads to destroy them.
Motaro failed, and the Chosen Warriors sneaked passed the Outworld defenses and killed Shao Kahn.
