Story: Smoke has no memory of his parents. He, like both the Sub-Zero brothers, were born for the sole purpose of serving a Chinese clan known as the Lin Kuei.
Over the years, Smoke became the good friend of Sub-Zero the Sixth. In 1993, Sub-Zero the Fifth, the Sixth's older brother, was sent to assassinate Shang Tsung through Mortal Kombat. With Sub-Zero the Sixth still in the last stages of training, he pleaded Smoke to go watch his brother, just to keep an eye on him. Smoke brought that proposition forward to his Grandmaster. The Grandmaster complied, saying it would be a good experience for the young warrior.
Smoke watched in horror as he saw his friend die at the hands of the Hellspawned Scorpion. He reported his sad findings to the Grandmasters and to Sub-Zero the Sixth. Smoke then sought out to discover how to master Scorpion's weapon: the harpoon.
Although Scorpion had gained the power to launch one of these projectiles from the palm of his hand, Smoke found it necessary to carry one with him, but he was very formidable with it.
Sub-Zero the Fifth's mission had not been completed: Shang Tsung remained. So, with his younger brother finally out of training, Sub-Zero the Sixth was sent to finish the job in the Outworld. Smoke was ordered to follow. The Grandmasters told him that if Sub-Zero failed, he would be forced to step through the portal to finish the job and assassinate Shang Tsung.
Smoke did as he was told, but under ulterior motives. He was watching out for his friend, making sure he didn't suffer the same fate as his brother. He watched from the secluded forests of the Outworld the proceedings of the tournament. Once again, they didn't go as planned.

Sub-Zero nearly died in battle with Shang Tsung. The sorcerer left him for dead and continued serving Kahn. Smoke dragged Sub-Zero back through the portal to Earth and together they went back to Lin Kuei headquarters. The Grandmasters were furious with Sub-Zero but also with Smoke for not completing the mission and terminating Tsung. It was then that they discovered an awful secret . . .
Cyrax and Sektor had not been friends to them, but the two knew their fellow warriors. They had both been turned into machines.
The Lin Kuei had taken up the practice of transforming their living soldiers into soulless automatons. The pair also uncovered another horrific truth: they were next!
Sub-Zero and Smoke fled Lin Kuei headquarters. Sub-Zero was injured and scarred across the eye, but he escaped nonetheless. Smoke, however, was not so lucky. He was captured and transformed into LK-7T2, a robotic soldier code named: Smoke.

Smoke, now without memory or emotions, was programmed along with Cyrax and Sektor, to seek out and destroy the renegade Sub-Zero, who had taken off his mask as a sign that he no longer served the Lin Kuei. That, in itself, was a violation of the sacred codes of the Lin Kuei, so he had to be destroyed.
Cyrax was caught by Sub-Zero and reprogrammed to destroy Shao Kahn. Sektor found himself under seige by the Outworlders, considered them a threat, and initiated the self-destruct sequence that blew out a large chunk of Kahn's fortress.

Sub-Zero then apprehended Smoke and disabled him. With grueling hours of pictures and sounds, Smoke slowly began to regain his memory and discovered that he still had a soul within the artificial body. They both then assisted Liu Kang in bringing Kahn's reign to a fast halt.
Sub-Zero and Smoke returned to the now disbanded Lin Kuei. Sub-Zero began to work on a way to bring Smoke back to his human body. His work was interrupted when he had to don his mask once again and join the war with Shinnok.
