Eric and Kevin's China Adventure

August 18, 2001

Another day of basically doing nothing. Our schedule was the usual; wake up, eat breakfast, get on the bus, drive for a long while, get to our next destination. After we left Mianyang, we drove for a while until we got to the San Xin Duei Museum. This exhibit showed the same type of stuff that a bunch of people from our Chinese school saw when we went to the National Gallery of Art. The site they dug it up from is called San Xin (Three Stars) and in it, they discovered artifacts from the Shu people (3500 years ago). Sadly, they believed that the people of that time purposely destroyed all their artifacts possibly because they were about to be defeated in a war or something, and then threw the shattered pieces into piles (they excavated two sites). Therefore, archaeologists had to piece together the artifacts like a puzzle, and the end results are displayed in this museum (many other artifacts are overseas as well, such as Japan, where they broke two artifacts by accident…tsk tsk tsk…the adults later passed some time on the bus by making Japanese, and other political jokes). With another stop, the moms left with even more stuff they bought…aiye.

Lunch in Chengdu was our next stop and then it was on to Chongqing (still in Sichuan, but it’s kind of like government territory, so the license plates have a different word on it…hard to explain). When we got to Chongqing, we had only one tourist stop, and that was to Da Tian Li, which is this big meeting area constructed in 1954. It can hold like 4000 people, and the outside is designed to look like Tian Tan mixed with a bit of Tian An Men. On the outside looking in, I wanted to know what was inside, but once I got inside, it wasn’t all too interesting.

When we got to the hotel (Holiday Inn Yangtze Chongqing…four stars…room 1315), we entered our rooms, and when we got to dinner, we learned that there was some confusion with the tour guides and the local guide from Chengdu took us to Da Tian Li, when the local guide in Chongqing (her last name is Yang) was supposed to. Therefore, the new guide was kind of mad, because now all she’s doing is seeing us off to the boat and then waving goodbye. In a way, now we have 3 guides because the guide from Chengdu is still staying a night here, and we’ll say goodbye tomorrow morning (all of the adults really like him because he’s really smart and really funny, they want to request him for their next vacation).

Well, physically I think I’m getting worse. I didn’t feel all that great this morning (light-headed and my stomach hurt), so I took some Tylenol and slept on the bus. Added to that, I have like 10 bug bites on my legs and one arm, so I’m going to wear pants now. Hopefully I won’t get seasick on the boat that we’re boarding tomorrow morning (we’re going to be travelling down the Yangtze River). Sigh…the camp reunion is going on right now and it sucks that I can’t be there. I called Brett last night (I called Ian too, but his housekeeper said he was at Brett’s house), and left a message (this was at around 11 am EST) telling him to say hi to everyone at the reunion for Eric and I. I just wish that I could call someone at the reunion and actually talk to people, but I can’t because I can’t call a cell phone with an IP phone card (uses the Internet, and the wavelengths or something are different than a cell phone). Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to talk with people when I get back.
