My apologies for the length of time the system has been offline. As you may be aware, the game has been constantly under attack from people attempting to hack it since this weekend. I have attempted to fill all the recently uncovered gaps but it does take time. Rather than have the game reset every time something happpend, I decided to make the necessary changes to make the game more stable. Please note: The game is now automatically removing objects enhanced by the use of hacking tools. If you notice items missing from your inventory that is likely why. Do not ask for those items to be returned. They have been permanently destroyed. Also, repaired the yes/no combat command line option.

Just prior to this downtime, I added some quickie fixes for some hacks that were crashing the server. This one was for one I missed. Hopefully I have them all for now. Fasten your seatbelts. :)

Last night at the Royal Court meeting, Tyre was officially inducted into the Dragon Knights of Light, and also welcomed back after a brief absence was Sladric. Welcome (back) to the family, gentlemen. *smile*

Fix for a bug in the mail processing. Had to add some more checks for valid data. Sorry for the lengthy downtime, but it couldn't be helped. Also, please note: There seems to be an increase in the frequency of accounts being stolen. Do NOT give out your password or download software from any but the most trusted sites. Do NOT use third party software in conjunction with the game. If you do, you run the risk of either losing your account, your characters and belongings, or the account being disabled. Remember that once you execute one of the trojan programs, it can enable another person to record your keystrokes and extract that information at nearly any time. There is no guarantee that an Anti-virus program will detect the presence of newly developed or cloaked trojans so for your own safety, be security aware.

Some changes to the Magic Mail system that should improve processing speed. Also, fix for the Death Wish spell. It should no longer require you to be in proximity of your opponent. A small refinement added to the backfire mechanism, you will take damage equal to the greater of one half your opponents health, or one half your own. Increased the power of the Wrath Of The Gods spell to add some capability to that magic circle. Also, the spell will no longer damage your own group, with the exception of yourself if you are of Evil alignment.

A fix to handle invalid object creation which would crash the server. No further info on when Customer Service will be reinstated. Sorry.

3/07/99 Congo Rats to All!

Last night's guild meeting was a great success. The turnout was better than it has been in a while, and everyone's spirits were high (almost too feisty, at some points *wink*). Congratulations are in order for Moorcat, who received the Medal of Charity and was promoted to the rank of Acolyte in the Enchanters' Legion; to XSkye for his in absentia receiving of the Medal of Creativity; and to Aylah, who was unable to attend but was promoted to the rank of Squire in the Legion of Wanderers. Our lady Morraga was also officially inducted into the Royal Court last night as Royal Page. Kudos to you, Morr!
An engagement announcement was also made by Hawaiin and KATHIRINE - party to be held this evening, please check the message board for more details.

Found and fixed bug in the mail sending routine that would cause a lock condition when a blank recipient or text was sent (under certain conditions). This would cause the server to wait forever and not process any other activity.

Anti-duping mechanism added to prevent attempts just prior to 3:00 am system maintenance. Also, fix for the area in the desert (room 21554) which would cause a crash if you tried to proceed to the west. Thanx for your support!

3/03/99 Guild Meeting

I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know exactly how the reorganization at Sierra is affecting The Realm. The short answer is not too much. Obviously, since our entire customer service staff was let go there will be an interruption in the normal customer service system. The plan is to move the responsibility of customer service up to Bellevue in the next few weeks. I can only apologize for these problems. They are being solved as quickley as possible. You can, however, still contact technical support on any technical issues that you are having with the game as they were unaffected.

The system for removing wanted status should now be corrected. If you have murdered an innocent player, and then later killed by an innocent player, your wanted status should clear. If you have murdered more than one innocent player, you must atone for each one of the crimes separately. However, all pickpocketing crimes are cleared regardless of number if you are killed by an innocent (non-criminal) player. The bounty system is still under design so that isn't in yet. Also, a fix for grouped players crashing on resurrection that I uncovered. A fix for attribute update hacking was added to prevent server crashes.
