Magic Rune

Regions - Balazar and the Elder Wilds - Attitudes towards Outsiders/Non-humans

Outsiders in General

The average Balazaring looks at foreigners with a mixture of fear, respect and greed. Fear due to the large number of Balazarings who have perished in foreign lands or locally during the Lunar conquest of Elkoi, respect due to their martial/magical abilities and superior technology, and greed due to common Balazaring belief that the average foreigner is as rich as the citadel kings. Foreign ways and manners are to be feared but foreign possessions are much coveted.

Lunars

The Lunars are feared and respected due to their "easy" conquest of Elkoi and the obvious military and magical might they possess. They are especially respected/feared because they're the only foreigners who have bothered to invade Balazar for hundreds of years. The Balazarings are incapable of telling one Lunar from another so Immtherings, Dara Happans and Carmanians are basically interchangeable to them.

Light-Bringers

Mixed feelings. The Balazaring tradition of Yemalio worship tends towards a traditional antipathy towards Orlanthi however some Balazarings are beginning to identify Orlanthi as Lunar foes. (Ignoring the basically Orlanthi nature of the neighbouring kingdoms).

Non-humans

In General

Generally speaking Balazarings fear and distrust non-humans. They have a long history of antipathy and hostility towards non-humans which is returned by their non-human neighbours. For the most part their non-human neighbours are militarily, technologically and magically superior to them.

Elves

Even though they worship the same god, Yemalio, the Balazarings and aldryami (or forest folk) have not traditionally had good relations. The Aldryami were one of the groups of non-humans the Balazarings played off against each other in the second age to their own advantage. Since the forests of Balazar were burned in the Second Age there is less cause for conflict as the Balazarings don't want the elves' forests. The Aldryami are the non-human group the Balazarings respect the most and are their most likely allies. No Balazaring would dare cut down a tree or even picking deadwood without asking the forest people for permission first.

Dwarves

The Balazarings haven't had as much contact with the Mostali as they have with the other major groups of non-humans in the area. Again, they have a history of having played the various groups against each other so there is a history of distrust there. The dwarven way of life is so alien to the Balazarings that they basically have no common ground for interaction.

Trolls

Balazaring tradition has it that Balazar drove the trolls out of Balazar in the Second Age. Balazarings fear trolls due to their (what they consider) cannibalistic behaivour and superior military skills.

Dragonewts

Dragonewts are closely associated with Dragons and the Dragonkill war that killed Balazar. Balzarings tend to fear and shun dragonewts.
