Before Time |
Votank leads his people from the darkness
and teaches them his way. (Balazaring belief). |
At the Dawning |
"The region was dotted with clumps of gaunt trees where lonely
elves huddled in bitter defense. Human families skulked in the shadows, seeking stark fare
to eke out their miserable lives. Dwarves were buttressed in Greatway, but their interests
had been in Dragon Pass and they sent few patrols to this region. Only troll warparties
stalked the land in strength, crossing the cold mountains from Dagori Ingarth to fulfill
their pledge to fight and destroy chaos everyplace." [GM p. 6] |
After the Dawning |
"The ascent of the sun and the passage of the Lightbringers
quickly brought back the old life to the land, and the ancient scrub woods blossemed into
lush forests nearly as rich as the virgin woods which had once been there. Elves even
planted some Great Trees of Shanassee in their strongholds. Game returned too, and the
human hunters grew stronger." [GM p. 6] "During that time there was no fight
between ancient races, for they still remembered their mutual struggle against chaos. [GM
p. 6] Ambassadors from the First Council entered the region and were quickly accepted.
"... for generations the region lived in peace and grew to health. The elves sailed
their lake and rivers, carrying dwarf goods northward after being boated down the Dwerrow
River. Trolls continued their gustatory control of the dinosaurs and dragonewts settled
several colonies. Humans hunted to their bellies' delight as animal herds grew, engaging
in a silent struggle with trees for the good of the plains." [GM p. 6] |

Many Balazarings move to Dorastor to be with the World Council.of

375-450 |
Elves and humans war on the trolls. With Broken Council aid the
trolls are expelled from the Elder Wilds. Elves and humans join in the fight against
Arkat. Trolls raid from Dagori Inkarth. |
??? |
Battle of Travelling Stone. Elder Wild elves almost wiped out in
battle. |
450- ??? |
Arkat aids trolls in Elder Wilds. Elves on defensive. |
450-700 |
Non-humans (trolls, dwarves, elves and dragonewts) war in Elder
Wilds. Humans gain by carefully playing one side off against the other. |
717 |
Redlands army moves through Elder Wilds on its way to
plunder Dragon Pass, disrupting the herds and causing great hunger among the tribes,
stealing and killing as they went. (This is one of the reasons for the traditional
Votanki dislike of the north). |
718 |
Westernmost Votanki clans spotted the returning army and the chiefs
quickly gathered the clans at Highbridge. A few dragonwets and trolls joined them in order
to recapture their ancestral treasures stolen by the army from Dragon Pass. The Votanki
and their allied attacked the army while it was split in two by Highbridge and killed many
of the invaders. The survivors fled without their plunder. The non-humans took their
treasures and goods back, the rest was divided among the victors and items of great note
were set aside to be returned to Dragon Pass. |
720 |
King Hargaard Silverfist returns some of the plunder stolen by the
Pentans from Dragon Pass to the Empire of the Wyrms Friends. This leads to growing
relations between the Votanki and the EWF. |
721 |
Envoys from the EWF travelled to the Elder Wilds to solicit
support. EWF lends Imperial dragonewt forces to drive trolls and dwarves from Votankiland.
Just another example of Votanki wishy-washiness when it comes to non-humans. |
747 |
Uz invade Greatway, the dwarven citadel achieving great success.
They also burn the forests in the area now known as Dangerground. [GM p. 7] |
Late eight hundreds |
Votanki play non-humans off against each other by
making rotating alliances of convenience. (This is part of the origin of the
traditional antipathy between the Votanki and their non-human neighbours). |
890 |
Elves of the Elder Wilds withdraw from EWF. They raid the EWF with
a large force which escapes unharmed. |
10th and 11th centuries |
Votanki struggle to free themselves from domination by
the Empire of the Wyrms Friends. Many outsiders enter Votanki lands during this century
trying to carve out kingdoms for themselves but fail until Balazar arrives with his
followers. |
1042 |
EWF destroyed. |
1040's |
Humans hard pressed in Votankiland by non-human raids. |
1080's |
Balazar enters Votanki lands (1082). Within five years
he has become leader of all the tribes (1087). After two years he is proclaimed king of
all the region which is renamed in his honour (1089). Balazar attempts to impose many
changes on the traditional Votanki lifestyle (especially the construction of the citadels
and the introductions of animal husbandry and the worship of Yemalio). This results in
a conservative backlash by elements (especially among some of the traditional religious
leaders, the sinwists) who proclaim a return to "traditional" Votanki beliefs
and refuse to join Balazar's kingdom. Balazar decides to allow them to leave the area
rather than forcing intercine warfare. He persuades the Aldryami of the Elder Wilds to
allow the Votanki to settle on the north shore of the Elf Sea. Balazar's diplomatic skills
and his membership in the cult of Yemalio helps persuade the Votanki as does their
agreement to swear the Big Vow. Balazar lends the elves his military strength on a season
of raiding as well to help weaken the trolls. With this the Votanki pass out of mainstream
Balazaring history. |
1120 Dragonkill War. |
Balazar and all of followers who joined the True
Golden Horde are killed. His sons (and daughter if the Dykenee are to be believed) once
they reach their majority argue and divide the kingdom between themselves. |
1250 |
Trio of giants begin ravaging travelers near Dykene.
The king of Dykene is slain in combat with them and the citadel itself is destroyed. |
1300's |
Refugees from the expansion of the Lunar Empire begin
entering Balazar. Many of these just pass through, though many others raise bands of
hunters as raiders for more civilized lands. |
1362 |
Battle of the Falling Hills results in Tarshite
victory over the Lunar Empire. Balazarings make up a large part of Tarshite army. This
cuts off the flow of refugees into Balazar as they go to Tarsh instead. [GM and King of
Sartar (KoS] |

Remnants of the Opili and allied nations of horse nomads ambushed
by united Balazaring Kings. See A History of
the Lunar Empire: The Third Wane on the Glorantha
site for more details. |
15th and first half of the 16th centuries |
Balazarings keep to themselves mostly. The odd
restless tribesman (or woman) leaves home to fight as a skirmisher for foreign rulers but
most tribal leaders keep their warriors close to home. |
1440-1490 |
Balazarings raid Tarsh during this period of great unrest there. |
1526-1564 |
Vizkinni clan rule Elkoi. Last and greatest of the
Vizkinni clan, Partobas the Bold is very successful in raids on Lunar Tarsh and the other
neighbouring Lunar provinces. |
Between 1555-1564 |
King Iertand Vizkinni of Elkoi slain by Phargentes, King of Tarsh.
[KoS] (My guess at a date would be 1560, halfway through the period. This gives
Partobas time to be the "greatest of the line." Peter suggested that he was
either Partobas' father or uncle. I like uncle so I'm going with that one). |
1564 |
Small Lunar forces captures Elkoi, kills Partobas,
stick his head on a spike and sells his relatives into slavery. Bykotus, a loyal
hunter is installed by the the Lunars as the new king and a small garrison is established
there. |
1580 |
Grandfather of Skilfil Heartpiercer starts rebuilding
Dykene with dwarven help. |
1603? |
Nobody-won-war between Trilus and Dykene. (Said to have occured
a generation before the present date under King Skilfil's father. Since I've arbitrarily
set the campaign start date as 1618, using a generation of 15 years 1603 works for me). |
1607 |
Praxians raid Balazar. (My take on this is that they attacked
Elkoi and were easily repulsed despite the relatively small garrison. After that they
wandered around a bit in Balazar raiding but eventually tired of the poor pickings and
left). [Different Worlds #28] |
1608 |
Yalaring Monsterslayer conquers Trilus, killing
Feobald the Cleanser last of the Gadaringer dynasty. (The name of the last
Gadaringer is from Troll Gods thanks to Peter). |
