The film was released August 30th, 1991, and grossed a disappointing $14,960,255, a massive drop from Child's Play 2 and especially 1.

In the UK, two young boys killed a three-year-old child and the press condemned Child's Play 3 for giving them the inspiration to do so. The film was not banned, but many video stores refused to sell it and several television stations refused to air it.

The televised version of the film contains numerous scenes that were cut from the theatrical release:
* More dialogue between the Play Pals president and his employee at the very beginning.
* While on the bus to military school, Andy meets and talks with Tyler.
* Extra dialogue between Andy and Tyler.
* A scene where Andy and Whitehurst are talking before Shelton comes into the scene when they are standing at attention.
* When De Silva and Andy are getting some action in the woods, Shelton finds them.
* After the garbage man dies, a small scene appears with Andy being snapped to attention by the teacher as he spaces out in class.
