Computer History
(Sorry, there is a lot of syntax errors, I'm francophone)
A huge majority of the peoples use computer in their life. But, as many useful inventions, already nobody know who invented their machines. In this text I will describe the history of the computer and I will try to answer at this following question: Who invented the computer?
BC
The first calculation aids called Abacus. It was invented around 500 BC. It was made of beads on rods or wires. It was used in China and Japan.
XVII e Century
It’s Edmound Gunter who got the first step of computer in 1920. But in 1921, William Oughtred use the idea of Gunter for make the Slide Rule, a machine who is able to calculate multiplication, division and many other complex calculation. But this machine can’t make addition and subtraction. This method will be use for 300 years.
A German named Wihelm Schickard invented the first adding machine, in 1623. This machine had a mechanical system with gears. To make calculation, you just had to turn the gears.
XIX e Century
In 1804, Joseph Jacquard invented a punched card.
Charles Babbage thought, in 1822, to build a machine that could resolve complex calculation and print them. It’s him who though at the base of today’s computers.
XX e Century
The first fully electronic computer was Manchester Mark I (1948). It was invented by a group of scientists in England. It was able to read a program from paper tape.
The Fortman was the first computer that can read instructions as READ, FORMAT or PRINT. John Backus invented it in 1956.
Ed Robert and the MITS in vented the first Microcomputer (MITS Altair) in 1975.
To summarize, I think of we can’t find one people who invented the first computer, but a group of many people in many centuries. But, I think that two of them are a little bit more important: Babbage, because he thought the principle and the group of scientists who invented Manchester Mark I because they used the electronic for built it.
