Getting items from locked chests inside Ruins
Well, in case you haven't already figured it out, there's NO WAY you can open the locked chests in the Ruins.  However, there is still a way to GET those items.  Simply follow the instructions below...
1- You need the appropriate Map to enter each Ruin.  Have any of the ACTIVE fighters carry it, don't give it to any inactive member and don't leave it in the inventory;

2- If there are enemies around the Ruins entrance, defeat them first, but leave the Boss alive: all Ruins, except for one (Observatory Tower), can only be entered during battle.
Special instructions for Tower Ruins and Kingdom/Catacombs Ruins at bottom of page;

3- Regroup as many of your fighters as you can around the entrance without inspecting it, but don't position any fighter in front of the entrance unless you're ready to enter;

4- Have any fighter Inspect the entrance.  This will open the door and allow one or two Thieves to enter, but you will also be able to enter;

5- Move each fighter in the doorway and select MAP MOVE for each one.  If this option doesn't appear, you're not on the right spot;

6- Synbios CAN'T enter the Ruins (except Observatory Tower Ruins but not while in battle mode), so if there are still enemies left, take Synbios as far away from them as possible, to avoid ending the battle;

7- Fighters inside the Ruins should advance as much as they can every time.  The idea is to block ALL possible exits with a strong fighter;

8- None of your fighters can open a locked chest, but the Thieves CAN.  The idea is to let them grab ALL the treasure, then defeat them.  That is why you need to block all exits : they must not escape with the treasure!  So be sure to locate every exit before you begin the battle by pressing B button to explore the landscape or selecting MAP;

9- Once the Thieves have all treasure, you can attack them.  If you kill them, they will drop ALL treasures at once, so your fighter will need to have enough place to carry all items, else you will need to discard some.  If you perform a non-lethal attack, they will drop only one item each time;

10- Once ALL Thieves are defeated, or when the last one exits the Ruins, your party will exit the Ruins and they will collapse, so be sure you have gotten everything before you defeat the last Thief.  Once the Ruins have collapsed, you can NEVER go back inside, not even by using the Return spell and starting the battle again.  So if you're about to make a decisive move, save first.  If it doesn't work, you can Reset the game.

NOTE: Some Barrels, when attacked, will give you an item such as Medical Herb or Healing Drop;  they might not be rare items, but they might prove useful, and you don't have to buy them.  In addition, attacking a Barrel gives you 5 EXP points...
Tower Ruins and Kingdom/Catacombs Ruins special instructions

While you will be climbing the Observatory Tower, Thieves will already be on the way to enter the Ruins, unlike other Ruins where they wait for you to inspect them.  The general idea: ENTER ASAP !  Same for the Catacombs Ruins. So forget steps 3 and 4 from the above section and use these alternate steps instead:

3- Advance each character as much as you can to reach the Ruins in the less moves possible;

4- If a fighter can get close to the entrance but not reach it during that move, position him/her so he/she will block the entrance from enemies and be able to reach the entrance on the next move.  If you don't block the entrance, an enemy might position itself in front of it and prevent you from entering until it is defeated, AND YOU DON'T WANT THAT !...;

NOTE: on step 7, you should know there are 2 exits at the back of the room, which look like holes in the floor.  That is where the Thieves will head to once they have gotten all treasures.  Thief that went left will head for the left exit, Thief that went right will head for the right exit.  Stopping them both is excellent, but give priority to right-Thief, who got Nelson Lance and Wendigo Wand.  Left-Thief has a Small Mithril and a Large Mithril, so try to stop him too.
Some treasures, such as the Mitra Ankh, Light Of Hope and Healing Rain, are VERY valuable.  To be sure you're not missing any, visit Thorn Martin's Shining Force 3 Item Checklist.
