FM Wong Zi Jing failed to get
an IM norm in his first bid at the First Saturday
tournament in Hungary. But he is trying again.
He will be playing at the Wah Seong
Penang International Master Chess tournament
tomorrow.
And if he can obtain six points out
of nine rounds, he will get his norm.
At the tournament in Hungary, Wong
only scored 5.5 points out of 12 rounds - short by
half-a-point to get his norm.
In his last three rounds, he only
managed to beat Hungarian FM Zoltan Nemeth in round
nine.
He drew with unrated American
player Eric Cooke and unrated Armenian player David
Karatorossian in round 10s and 11. Karatorossian is rated at
2345 while Cooke is rated at 2266.
Let's hope that after the Hungarian
experience, Wong would be able to carry himself better in
Penang.
But the Penang tournament is not
likely be an easy one for him.
There he will have to play against
Indonesian GM H Ardiansyah, Chinese IM Liu
Wenzhe, Indonesian IM Nasib Ginting, Malaysian IMs Mas
Hafizulhilmi Agus Rahman and Jimmy liew.
It will be a tall order for Wong.
But if he is of IM quality, nothing will stop him from
getting the norm in that category-four
tournament.
