Lieutenant Crono
Crono is a typical
teenager whom fate chooses to save the world. He is a skilled
swordsman, and as he journeys on, he learns Lightning Magic
spells.
Hello students. Some of you who have come directly from
watching SquareSoft's recreation of my adventure may be surprised
to see me talking. I'd like to explain something about that. In
the game, I'm the main character, and the player is supposed to
be me, so I can only say what the player has me to say. Whatever
was said with me on the lead, that was me speaking, but you
couldn't hear it. If I were mute, how did Marle know my name when
I met her on the fair, for example?
Another thing, people keeps asking me what did it feel to die.
I didn't die and come back. Using the Chrono Trigger, my friends
saved me before Lavos destroyed me, destroying the clone instead.
Before they went to Death Peak, I really was dead. But now, it
never happened, I never lived or felt it.
Well, the Almighty Captain
Saul -he made me say that- told me you should know you a little
more about me.

I live in Truce Village. About my age,
there is some discussion. Most agree I am seventeen, but I don't
recall saying that anywhere. My best friend is Lucca, but she'd
never admit how important I am to her.
I heard that!
Well, there seems to be some mysteries about Crono's life.
Actually, you end up knowing more about Magus than about him!
People then thinks he just has a totally normal irrelevant life,
as he is Mrs. Guardia Typical Mother's son. But yet there are
some mysteries on him, like the whereabouts of his father and
where did he get so great sword skills without any training.
You should see how difficult is to learn
all that only with a wooden sword, but I got the best stuff in
the way of the adventure. It's easy if you take real life
practice. I didn't even master Cyclone until I had my first real
fight. I can teach some of these in this academy thanks to
Saul...
Of course the pathetic guy had to promote
himself...
WHO INVITED YOU HERE???
Hey, nice place!
Hey Celes, I thought you were
with Locke. Did he go off with a waitress or something?
Slap!
Shut up!
Whoa, she sure is angry. Maybe
Locke DID go off with a waitress.
Will you keep your mouth shut or do you
want another?
I will not tolerate this kind
of behavior. Crono, I order you to escort lady Celes to
the exit of the Academy.
Order ME???
Well, now that you note the
slight difference of size caused by the discrepancy in game
backgrounds, I'm forced to take a course of action.
WHAT??
He said something to the effect that
since FFIII characters are smaller than CT Characters he'll have
to do something. Good, someone else spoke like me.
Yeah, now here comes the part
where I impress everyone with my exclusive icon change! Are you
ready?
TA-DAM!
... (Crickets
chirping are heard)
I guess you're, um... to
impressed to talk. Now where were we?
I was telling you that you're a tota-
I want to study here!
You want to WHAT?
Well, since you got MY Atma Weapon, I
might as well try the Rainbow.
I once heard the rumor there
was another Atma Weapon in Phoenix Cave. Did you check it?
That's absolutely fake. I would have found
it.
LOCKE!
Here we go again... Well, I
guess now we could actually begin the classes instead of keeping
the nonsense babbling.
Sure, now that no one is interrupting me.
Terra, do you know how to handle a katana?
.?

I guess that's a no. Hold it
like this.
Oh, like this? It's not too difficult.
Em... yes... That's around the way... I
think.
Why don't you start explaining
the techs. That's what everyone wants to hear.
If you say so... Here we go. I'll show
them to you one by one so watch carefully.

Cyclone:
Crono jumps towards a dummy and lands a sword's
length from him. He starts spinning and as soon as he has a
little of momentum, takes his sword out so he begins to damage
the enemy with it. All this is done while circling the enemy in
the same direction that the spin. After circling the dummy three
times, Crono stops facing the direction he came from and quickly
jumps back.
Did you catch it? This one is pretty easy
once you've mastered it. First you must keep in mind that you
have to get in and out as quickly as possible, just taking enough
time to do the necessary damage. The good thing about this attack
is that if you plan it right as you possibly already practiced in
the game, you can damage several fiends at once. The disadvantage
is that you can get dizzy very easily and the enemies may use any
moment of confusion to attack you... Did I just say "did...
disadvantage"? Man, I must be spending too much time with
Lucca.
I sure hope you're planning to change
that.
Marle! Um... em... sure... ah... why
don't we go on to the next tech?
Slash:
Crono draws his sword so the tip is slightly
touching the ground. Hardened battle experience allows him to do
the following without concentrating longer than fractions of a
second. In a blink, he lifts his sword up and the air struck by
the blade of the sword forms a second blade that travels
undisturbed by a few feet, cutting the dummy on its way.
That technique is typical of
Samurai warriors. If you're interested, this kind of attack is
called Izuna. You need to be very quick in the sword
move, which has to be a perfectly straight line. And of course,
it won't work with any other sword than a katana. It is a very
good attack as you don't even need to near the enemy and you can
hit several in a row, but you'll need lots of practice and body
control to be able to do this one.
*Lightning:
Okay, here we enter the
complicated stuff. I think you should first go visit Spekkio.

Hello. I am Spekkio. Do I look strong or
weak to you? If I look strong, you are strong. But if I look weak
like just some inches high, it's because you are truly weak.
Haha! I was just
kidding. In fact you have some powerful potential. It's just when
compared to Saul that any powers you may have seem almost n...
Very funny Saul.
You should go so the students can talk to the REAL Spekkio. No
wonder why you never finish up this place. When I was a kid -that
is older than you can imagine- we never posed as someone else,
particularly if he or she was an important person. But no, today
one works hard to become the master of war and any webmaster with
a graphical program can imperson you, that's no...
Okay, okay, I'm
leaving!
Good. Well students, I assume that your character
must be fit for "Lightning", or otherwise you wouldn't
have chosen Crono as a tutor. I would ask you to walk three times
around the corners of my room, but since we're on a wedpaid or
whatever it's named, I'll require you to move the pointer of you
mouse around the corners of the screen. What? You're thinking in
not doing it because it's silly and it won't work for anything? I
advise you to do it. Saul installed this little JavaScript
command so he can know and if you don't move the pointer as I
told you will really regret it later. Don't say I didn't warn
you.
Oh, yes, and how could I forget the magic words.
Stand still, think "MAGIC" and be ready for... IPSO
FACTO MEENIE MOE... MAGICO!!!!
There you are! Fortified with magic! By the way, did
you know that ipsofacto means, in latin, a sudden event?
I'll let you figure the meaning of the meenie moe bit
yourself... well, you're ready so go to Crono to learn the
remainder of his techs.

Oh, you're back! How did it
go? Uh? The captain tried to imperson Spekkio? Oh, well... Oh,
look! This has been an example about what I tried to say about me
not speaking in the game. Do you see the words you just told me
printed on the screen? All right, let's continue. Look at this!
Crono stands still and extends his arms. He
focuses on taking the energy contained on his body out. Two
spheres of yellow energy form and grow big enough to fill his
palms. Immediately, Crono lifts both of his arms up and the
spheres of energy quickly spread in the form of millions of
sparks that travel up to the sky. Then, the energy changes itself
into a bolt of lightning and falls precisely on the dummy, not
causing damage to anything else.
There it is! In fact, doing
this one is stupidly easy after you are granted magic. You don't
have to worry about striking anything else, it's a magical bolt
so it'll only damage what it's set to. Enemies sensitive to it
will be damaged greatly. On the other hand, there are also
enemies that could be invulnerable to or healed by magic attacks
or lightning-type attacks. And of course as with all the techs,
it will deplete your MP, so you'll have to administer yourself.
Spincut:
Crono hops towards the dummy to get at close
range, then immediately jumps up higher than his own stature. At
the peak of the jump, he holds his sword over himself, and brings
it down at the same time he falls. He uses the combined momentum
as well as the great position to slice the dummy's upper portion
in half.
I don't know why did I name
this one Spincut. I didn't spin even once. Incredibly, it wasn't
as hard to develop as Slash, for example. It is rumored that you
need to be enhanced by magic to make a move like this, and that
may be true since I never did something like that before I got
the magic. But in that case, let me tell you it must be
unconscious, you don't have to think about magic the slightest
bit, just concentrate on your movement. It's a great attack since
you can get a direct hit to a sensitive point of most enemies, as
is the head or upper part. I don't see any problems with it
unless you're facing a very quick enemy that could use the time
you're without defense on the air to attack you.
*Lightning 2
Crono jumps to the center of the battle area. Concentration is
shown on his face as tiny sparks appear everywhere and are drawn
to him. A glow is seen briefly in his body before extends every
muscle on his body and fires four rays of light, accompanied of
course by several lightning bolts that fill the room and send the
dummy flying in explosions.
Well, this sure will need a lot more
effort than the previous ones. You'll need better understanding
of the magic as you must use your own power to call similar
energies in the area to join you. You must also have a great
overall physical condition since you'll be using your body to
channel the magic. First concentrate in gathering energy, then
take it out with all of your strength, but since it's so much
energy you'll need to use some of it to control the lightning.
That's what the four spinning beams of light are for. As with the
first Lightning spell, you don't have to worry about damaging
your allies or what surrounds you. Let's continue with the next
one.
Don't we need a new dummy?
Terra! I kinda had forgot about you. As
for the dummy, don't worry, that's what the next tech is about.
*Life:
Crono kneels towards the dummy and takes a deep
breath. From an unseen source, clear light centers over it. Crono
closes his eyes and hardly breaths as a seraph appears inside the
cone of light and disappears in sparkles inside the body of the
dummy. Suddenly, the dummy rebuilds itself as the light
disappears, though it's still damaged.
Phew! That is never easy to do. In fact,
I don't know if it's inside the "Lightning" category.
This is one of the lessons about magic that you should learn.
Magic is never the same for two people. You can classify it into
four types, but the truth is that the possibilities are infinite
as magic entangles with your soul as you gain skill. However, it
shouldn't be impossible for someone else outside of the
"Water" category -since it's the one that comprises
healing- to learn Life if it's within you the spirit of helping
others. It's a comparatively simple spell.
Crono, can you really give life back to
the dead?
I'm sorry I'm not, Terra. It isn't too
different of your own Life spell. We can only revive those who
are unconscious, and maybe those whose hearts have stopped
beating, but once the soul has crossed to the realm of the dead,
I doubt there's anything that can bring them back. Hmmm... I
guess we should go on. There's not much left.
Confuse:
Crono jumps towards the dummy and starts
running around it. With each step, he slashes down and back up on
the enemy continuously. He spins around him each time faster
until finally he stabs the sword on the body of his opponent and
takes it out in a slashing upwards arc.
Please don't ask me how do I do that. I
just concentrate in damaging the enemy so I don't know how do I
move around it. In the game, damage is counted only four times,
but as you see I slash considerably more times than four. You'll
also see it's a great skill, the enemy has no means of physical
defense. I don't see any bad point except you'll have to be
really good to be able to use it.
*Luminaire
And now look at this!
Crono looks up at the sky and starts
levitating. His face looks like in a state of trance. Slowly,
bright beams of energy surge from the center of the room,
excesses of the tremendous energy that is being concentrated in
that point. When the energy cannot be pushed any more, Crono just
opens his eyes and releases the hold on the energy, which is
released in a bright dome of light. The dummy disappears within
the attack. The dome grows until the energy cannot be orderly
contained anymore and opens, releasing the full brunt of the
energy that blinds every being on the room. Crono lands again and
no remainders of the dummy can be seen.
Did you like it? You probably know that
it's my most powerful attack. Again, I don't know if I should
show it to you. This is my special, trademark, personal, made-up
attack of mine and no one else, or at least that is the belief of
the captain. You could try to imitate it when you're powerful
enough, but it'll never be as powerful. When the time comes,
you'll have to develop your own maximum technique, which may be
of the lightning type but also unique. Well, I think we are done.
Terra, did you learn anything?
This is how you handle the katana, right?
(May need to press Stop in your browser)

You are finished. I mean, you've finished the
Cadet training under Crono. Time to see what your time has paid
off to.

If you're interested, mail me and I could send
you a copy with the name of your choice impressed instead of the
generic name given.
...
...
...
Whew!
There. It's finished. It
wasn't all that difficult, was it?
Whaddayya mean it wasn't
difficult?!? Do you have any idea of how much time did it take to
me to edit those images of previously unseen poses? I'd like to
see the FF3 programmers have Celes do a slap! And to top it off,
my laptop is damaged! How are you supposed to create a website
when you have to share the computer! And you must be happy
there's no school system where you live Crono! I have to get up
at 5:30 AM! Did you hear me Crono! Five-thirty AM! Of course, you
don't know what I'm talking about since you always get up after
ten! Ha! Thinking you're the best just because you beat Lavos!
I'd beat him too if I had nearly as much free time! You're lucky
I employed you on this one. I really should have started with
Magus. *sigh* He doesn't complain nearly as much. And he's sure
got more demand. Not that I prefer him personally, but more than
half the letters I got about the academy asked specifically about
him! This is no easy job, boy. Sure, look at the page size and
say "How long can it take to make a 25 KB page?" Well,
A LOT! Only this page uses over forty different images, and I had
to edit all of them! Just that Saul posing as Spekkio had me
working all last night! And what do I get in return? Nothing!
Just a lousy couple of hundreds of visits! I should get paid for
this! I've got Final Fantasy Tactics since last summer and
haven't got time to finish it! Do you think that's fair?
Xenogears is already out! I've just had enough time to finish
Zelda 64, and I didn't even get all the items! What does everyone
think I am? Superman? If at least I got some comments, but no,
everyone who comes keeps his mouth shut. Don't expect any more of
this if you don't mail me, people! I'm sick of having to deal
with this FrontPage Express that keeps showing the text when you
erase these and even my Geocities account is almost filled! How
do they expect one to cope with 11 megabytes. I have two more
websites to host, and those are very time consuming too, by the
way! It is simply not possibly that...
And thus it went until the end of time...
(Remember to close the Fanfare Music window or
you'll keep hearing it)
