The Archivist's Work

Character Quiz

Please note that this information was a reflection of Konrad as he was originally intended to be. He has since gone quite astray from my original expectations.

1. Your character is plagued by a recurring nightmare. Describe the dream.

I am in Carcosa...sitting on a throne. The room is empty and dark...cold winds blow in through broken windows...I can hear the occassional scream through them. The people of Carcosa are almost all dead...the survivor's are being slaughtered...it is upon my order.

2. From your character's point of view, in relation with peers/family, is it better to be loved that feared? Or better feared than loved? Would the answer be any different with any other group of people? If so, who?

Better to be loved...because fear motivates people to do harm...to avoid one. But with the Amberites, it is better to be feared, for they shown little love, and willingly betray those who trust them.

3. Take a Devil's Advocate stand. Describe what you (the player) hate about your character. What are good reasons for other characters to dislike/hate your character? What little, minor bad habit does your character have that would annoy anyone after a while?

Konrad is weak...and whiny. He lacks ambition, though he has the power to pursue it, and he contents himself to dream of Carcosa when he should be striving mightily to reach it. Konrad doesn't really lack ambition...he merely refuses to recognize it in himself...and this makes him weak.

4. Your character gets into a *discussion* about death and dying. How would s/he describe the perfect death?

Konrad would probably describe the perfect death as some kind of sacrifice for a greater cause.

5. What was your character like at the age of ten? Was s/he a wimp, a bully, a nerd, a snitch, or a klutz? Popular or not? Write up a little description, and if you like, a little day-in-the-life story about your character at that age.

Konrad was always big for his age...this was his unconscious way of keeping other people from picking on him. For the most part he was shy and reclusive, content to read and be left alone. He had/has a great tendency to snoop.

6. What would provoke your character to murder a random guy on the street? A lie? An insult? An attack? A crime against one of your friends? Nothing?

An attack would provoke a similarly violent response...or perhaps an accusation of his shapeshifting nature by someone who had no right to make it. Insults and lies would be laughed at by Konrad, who would probably ask them how wise it was to offend a guest of the Royal Family.

7. Assume your character has just finished a month-long struggle against hard odds, working towards something of great value to her/him. Suddenly, the final stage of the opposition turns out to be stronger than you expected and you are attacked where you are weakest. It may not be a battle to the death, but it will definitely determine whether or not your quest is a success. Unexpectedly, you receive a trump call from a senior relative offering assistance. This relative is a champion in the field of battle where your character is currently struggling and, if asked, will either move through to help or leave you to the challenge. Do your character accept the help? Or reject it? What if the battle involves your greatest attribute. Would the decision be the same? Finally, what if the battle was a matter of life and death. And failure would equal your character's death. Would your answer be the same?

Konrad would gladly accept help from someone he trusted (Mandor). He would only take assistance from others if his life depended upon it.

8. How would your character describe their perfect mate/spouse? Do you, the player agree? How is s/he mistaken? Overly idealistic? Or is your character looking for all the wrong things?

Konrad probably assumes that he would make a good husband, but in reality he is far too cool...to inhuman...to be truly human. This is not to say that he is evil; rather his powers have so distanced him from what he was that it is just a mystery to him.

9. If your character uses servants, which servant is most trusted? Most liked? Most indispensable? Describe each of them.

Konrad's only servants would be his own creations, and they would probably be rather disgusting, but very effective and well-cared for.

10. Everybody has some little item that they regard as somehow sacred. A piece of clothing, a memento of some event, whatever. What is your character's sacred item? Tell the story of how you found it, or why it came to be important.

Konrad's sacred item is his copy of The King in Yellow, which he found in the restricted shelves of the library. Since reading it he has dreamed of Carcosa, and all that it represents. It is important to him, because it was his first glimpse of the fantastic, of what lay beyond the bare stone walls of the library.

11. A relative, one respected but not feared, has committed the same breach of etiquette three times. Each time, in front of others, this person has treated your character as an inferior, giving you orders instead of making requests. And your performance has been criticized in front of others. You can arrange things such that you'll not be bothered again. Or you could confront the person. Or have a third party intervene. Which would you do? If you would have to explain your actions, what would you say?

I would await the next such offense, and then I would immediately confront the relative by refusing to so as s/he requested, and reminded him/her that I am a family member, not a serving maid. And should my performance be called into question, I would then reply that if the mission is so vitally important perhaps it ought to be done by him/herself.

12. Midway through a pleasant meal, with a very enjoyable companion, your character receives contact from the aforementioned enemy. Frankly, you're sick of the whole business, and don't relish becoming a pawn in someone else's game. How do you deal with the situation?

I'd tell the relative to go away, or ignore him, or simply reply that I'm not in the mood to be pestered, as I'm busy having supper.

13. Your character is the butt of a practical joke. Can you see the humour in it? Would you get even? Does getting even mean staging another practical joke?

Getting even for Konrad simply means refusing to help...refusing to provide important information. Konrad could take a joke, as long as it isn't cruel. If it was, he'd probably respond very sincerely like thus: "So what is it that motivates you to behave so rudely? Low self-esteem? Immaturity? Or just a complete lack of respect for anyone who treats you kindly...an expression of you self-hatred as it were? I'll be sure to treat you poorly in the future if that's what you prefer, and it seems you do."

14. To your character, does revenge mean (1) "an eye for an eye," (2) repayment with interest," (3) "the only good enemy is a dead enemy," or (4) something else? In exacting this revenge, would your character serve it hot, as soon as possible after the offense, or cold, awaiting a perfect time an place?

Konrad is cool about his vengeance, and for him revenge is best served when someone needs his help, and he casually refuses it in return for an earlier slight.

15. What emotions can your character express in public? Sorrow? Anger? Sadness? Humour? Disappointment? Joy?

Konrad is very expressive somewhat about his emotions, but has been raised in a radically different environment. As such, his expressions always seemed tinged with a kind of manic glee. He is confusing in that way.

16. Describe your character's voice. Would you say s/he speaks with formality? Casually? Does s/he have any favorite expressions or curses?

His voice is soft and smooth, somewhat deep, and he tends to speak slowly, with frequent pauses. He tends to be formal in speech, but that's just because he thinks it is expected of him in Amber. He doesn't swear...doesn't curse...just kind of goes quiet when things go wrong. He seldom if ever says something without meaning to.

17. What expressions does your character use?

Generally he has a slight grin, smiles a lot in fact. When he frowns, it is for effect, and very deliberate.

18. What does your character wear by preference?

Grey robes with the Yellow Sign embroidered on his chest. He prefers grey and mustard yellow as his colors, and prefers comfortable clothing.

19. Do you wear makeup or jewelry?

No.

20. Are your ears pierced?

No.

21. What do you find boring that others enjoy?

Konrad is a librarian, and finds true joy in reading, researching, writing, and organizing.

22. You have been chasing an enemy for a long time; you have caught up, but only have time to give a quick death to him/her. What do you do?

Probably something using my powers, like a using Shapeshift Others to sever his spinal column (something that Konrad normally can't do). Otherwise he'd probably just behead him.

23. While driving down the road, you hit a dog and swerve off the road into a tree. Do you see to the car first, or the animal?

Konrad would always tend to the animal first.

24. When you were at school/in training, one of the teachers takes a shine to you and offers to give you extra training. Do you accept?

Naturally.

25. If you accepted the above - what do you do when another pupil finds out and tells others - who start teasing you?

Ignore them, or accuse them of being jealous.

26. You are walking home in the dark when you hear some noises around the corner. What do you do?

Konrad would investigate, being curious, but would try to be casual/stealthy about it.

27. How would you act above if you heard a man cry out for help?

Would go to investigate.

28. How would you act above if you heard a woman cry out for help?

Would go to investigate as quickly as possible.

29. When you were young, you used to arm wrestle with an old friend of your fathers - and you always lost. After an absence of ten years, the friend has returned, looking much older and weaker. He/she challenges you to a wrestle. You know that you can win. What do you do?

Probably beg off, saying that we both already know that he can beat me like he always did.

30. While in a gun fight with an enemy, you inadvertently shoot a man on his way home from work. After your enemy flees, you see that the man is dead. What do you do?

If he's dead, there's little Konrad could do. I'd move on to pursue the enemy. If I was in a situation where I needed to be stealthy, I'd probably use my abilities to cover up the wound/cause of death.

31. You have the opportunity to gain some information by torture, what do you do?

Most likely Konrad would have nothing to do with torture. If there was no other way, if a life hung in the balance, then Konrad would use his abilities to cause pain by nerve induction, or perhaps begin to make the victim monstrous....

32. How would you act above if you were not certain that the victim had any information?

Konrad would probably refuse to be a part of such an act.

33. The doctor tells you that you have 2 months to live. What do you do?

Konrad would spend those last two months doing everything in his power to reach Carcosa before he died.

34. A friend proudly shows you a painting that he/she has inherited. You know that he/she is not going to sell the painting, but will keep it for his/her own pleasure. You also know that the painting is a fake. What do you do?

Konrad would see little point in hurting the person's feelings, and being no art critic anyway, would say nothing.

35. How do you react to flattery?

Both Matthew and Konrad react similarly, either indifferently or sceptically, but not in such a way to draw attention to the lack of belief in the person's words. In other words, "Well...thank you for saying so."

36. While walking down the street, you see a woman with a clipboard ready to ask for answers to a questionnaire. What do you do?

Konrad would probably answer the questions unless he was in a serious hurry.

37. The Police arrest you for a crime you did not commit, how do you act?

Resentful...angry. Konrad would escape at the earliest possible moment

38. What is your greatest fear?

Konrad fears losing his humanity...becoming monstrous and evil.

39. Name one thing you would do that your player would not.

Konrad will do what it takes to achieve Carcosa. He will tolerate abuse, setbacks, and pain, with a determination that I lack.

40. Would you let another player character die in order to save some non player characters lives?

That depends upon how Konrad feels about the player character, but yes, he might. He may value Amber, but he has little reason to value the Amberites.
