Description |
|||||
He’s not an unattractive man, but nothing special to look at. He’s of average height and build, with black hair and gray eyes, like his father. He usually wears the order’s traveling robes, simple but utilitarian, but either due to poor tailoring or other existential reasons, never seems to quite fit into his robes very well, even the full-dress ceremonial garments. |

Background |
Darmon Wildford is the fourth son of a minor Baron, and as such he had no prospects -- no hope to inherit more than a horse and a good suit of clothes from his family, and even less hope of marrying into any better position. His father, Baron Wildford, traded him away to the church when he was twelve in an effort to curry favor with the local bishop. Darmon has lived in the temple community for ten years, working his way up through the ranks. One of the few gifts of his birthright was literacy, and Darmon spent long hours in the temple’s library, reading everything he could get his hands on, but with an especially strong taste for the tales of heroes. He fantasizes about living the life of Roland, Warrior-Priest and hero. Darmon’s daydreaming has become a problem in the temple. He’s been neglecting his duties, botching tasks, and his superiors think a little real world experience would do him some good, and perhaps be a bit easier on the furnishings around the temple. They’ve decided to send him out on a mission of sorts, hoping that one way or another the problem he represents will take care of itself, either when real world experience forces him to outgrow is naive ideas about heroes and heroism, or he comes to some more regrettable end; he finds some other calling, ends up married to some farmer’s daughter and raising pigs for the rest of his life, or, perhaps, he dies and goes on to serve his god in other ways. Darmon's been sent to recover Rinauldo's Book of Saints. It details the lives of heroes and saints from around the time of Sigmar, and may have some references to Sigmar that are not included in the usual canon. Still, it was mostly selected as Darmon's quest because it's exactly the kind of thing he'd love to get his hands on, so they could be sure he'd take the quest. The Priests are not even exactly sure the book exists -- it's mentioned in a few other sources, but in some not very reputably. And the author/editor's name casts some doubt on the book's canonical virtues, as it was more than likely written by a Tilean, whose academic virtues the Imperial academics, especially the church of Sigmar, do not hold in high regard. Darmon, as a character, will be honorable and dedicated to his traveling companions and mission, perhaps to a fault. He will be too trusting, too honest, and too willing to sacrifice himself for others, all a result of reading too many stories of the adventures of knights and heroes. He’s struggles with some of his vows, especially his vow of chastity, which is a particularly heavy burden for such a young man. Too much time in the temple has left a few things out of his education; he will trust beautiful women almost implicitly, and have a hard time not staring, etc. Darmon’s faith has always been a matter of habit more than true conviction. In the temple, it was just a part of everyday life, and has never been tested. With his head in the clouds all the time, he has been able to remain largely unaware of the more terrestrial, mundane, commercial aspects of temple life. In his travels, his faith will be tested for the first time, and we’ll just have to see what happens. |
