Master of Orion
by
Microprose (1994)
You are responsible for exploring the galaxy and colonizing it for your race. Along the way you will encounter several other alien races with the same goal. Furthermore, there are rumors that a planet named Orion holds the secrets of a long dead race. You must decide if you have what it takes to control the universe.
One of the greatest features about this game is that you don't have to destroy all of the opposing races to be declared ruler of the universe. Instead, you just have to win a majority of votes in the senate. Or if you don't like to have any kind of opposition, then you can kill off all the other species (that is the route I usually go).
Master or Orion is another empire building game, so to be successful, you need to balance diplomacy, economics, military, and research. Each of these catagories has an important part in winning Master of Orion. Another strong point in this game is that there is actually a bit of a mystery. As the game progresses, you get to discover more clues about the Ancient Orion race.
Although the graphics are not all that great, this is still an incredible game. As for the gameplay, it is not the greatest either, but it is solid. The fun comes from the fact that the game is designed so well. This is a true classic, and a game which everyone should own. Although it is probably difficult to find now, there is a sequel to this game (Master of Orion 2).

Summary: I would recommend this game to anyone who wants to play a good game. I think this game although a bit old, is still one of the best ever produced.
