Sierra (1997)

There are three pinball boards in this game, each with their own unique style and arcitecture. These tables are castle, tower, and dungeon. Sierra claims that there is a fourth table, but I never found it, but I am sure someone has discovered the trick to getting to that level. Despite my dislike of Sierra because of their horrible game The Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires, I actually enjoyed Creep Night. There were a couple of flaws in the game that were somewhat disturbing. For instance, the ball would periodiclly move through (sometimes, through the middle) of your flippers. That drives me nuts, and there is no excuse for that to occur. The physics of the game were not quite accurate during the course of the games. For instance, the ball would occasionally "stall" in mid air, and drop straight back down. However, that didn't usually make me miss my shots, so it was not a big deal. I also don't really mind a little bit of leeway when it comes to physics in pinball games. But if you are a stickler for physics and realism, this game may not be for you.

However, the rest of the game is pretty good. The graphics are pretty good for a pinball game. And some of the cartoon animation that Sierra used is kind of humerous. They give you plenty of challenges, flippers, and bumpers on each table. Plus each table has a different feel and strategy that is required for a successful run. So it is not just one table with different pictures on it. I personally found that the tower was the easiest for me, but I liked all of the tables.

I enjoyed this game enough to almost start liking Sierra again, but not quite. Although this is a good game, it still does not make me want to support Sierra. It will take a really solid Sierra game to get rid of the bad taste of The Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires.

Ratings
Graphics 8.7
Gameplay 9.2
Realism 8.5
Overall 8.8

Bottom Line: I am not a huge fan of pinball games, but they are fun to play occasionally. So if you are obsessed with pinball games, or use them for a quick distraction, I would recommend 3D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night as a good game to buy.
