Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires
by
Sierra (1996)
The premis behind this game is that you command one of the several tribes in the game. These range from the Chinese, to the Romans, to the Celtic tribes. Your goal is to build your empire up through conquest to eventually cover up the world and conquer your enemies.
This game initially seemed like an interesting twist on the Civiliztion style games that I have come to love, so I picked up a copy for around $10.00 (the price was also an enticing factor). Unfortunately this game did not live up to any of my expectations. In fact, this game is the reason I refuse to buy any more Sierra titles. The graphics are allright for this type of game. Not particuallrly good, but suitable. Since the idea behind the game is conquest, there is not much of a plot. The gameplay/interface was not too bad, but it wasn't great either. Up to this point the game is just okay. What really seperates this game, and makes it so horrible, is how tedious it gets to manage your forces. As well as the fact that there is a bug in the number of cities you can control. Although I was the most dominant force I couldn't win the game because I was not allowed to occupy any more cities! I don't know if there is a patch out there for this bug, but I was too ticked off at the game to really look.
Rating
Graphics 5.2
Gameplay 2.3
Plot 7.9
Overall 3.4
I would strongly recommend anyone from purchasing this game. Although if you like tedious games that you can't finish, then this may be the game for you!
