Reece's Army:
|
As he always does when playing his Speed Kills army, Bob placed one piece of deep water terrain to take advantage of his Therenody's range, and one curtain wall to take advantage of his Fell Reaper's superior speed and flight. However, Reece placed two pieces of blocking terrain, one two counter the water, and one in an attempt to box in Bob's army. Take note that Reece's Weresabertooth has fallen over in this picture. It suffers from "Amazon Draconum Complex," a terrible condition in which the figure is unable to keep itself upright due to an unfortunate sculpt. This will play an important part later in the game. Isn't foreshadowing great?

Bob advanced his army the same way he always does, the Therenody looking for a ranged advantage and the Nightmare Reaper covering him. His Fell Reaper went straight for the Blocking Terrain, looking for a support piece to go after. Meanwhile, on the other side of the board, Reece was advancing his army straight towards the middle. His rascally Weresabertooth wouldn't stay upright, though, so finally Reece got so fed up that he yanked that cat right off its base, as a lesson to the rest of his figures that they had better behave, or else! You'll notice that in the next picture, the figure is merely lying on top of the base.

The first engagement in the game was also a classic, and I mean classic example of completely jinxing yourself. Bob moved his Rell Reaper into Reece's Crystal Protector, with the rear arc of the Reaper touching the Protector. Reece based the Fell with his Trollkiller. On Bob's next turn, he was about to break away and fly back to the safety of the blocking terrain. He announced it something like this, "Now, I will break away with my Fell Reaper and deal shake-off damage to your Crystal Protector there, just like I do every game. I've never missed a break away roll that I can remember with the Reaper doing it this way. Here we go, anything but a 1." If you haven't guessed by now, the die turned up that dreaded single-dot. Trollkiller attacked the Reaper for 4 clicks down to three, and luckily for Bob, that meant the Fell still had flight. As soon as he could, he successfully broke away and headed for his healer. It would eventually be healed to its second slot. Reece's Protector had broken away so it wouldn't take shake-off damage, but Bob pinned it down with his Nightmare Reaper. Reece's options were to push the Protector to break away, or face 3 damage (a kill shot) by the Reaper. He decided to force the Nightmare Reaper to push to kill it and then attack it while it was pushed.
While that little drama was taking place, Bob positioned his Therenody so it was in position to shockwave the Weresabertooth, and that figure was the only one that was in shockwave range. He pushed to deal 4 clicks of damage (ingoring toughness mind you) to the Sabertooth, putting it onto its first Berserk slot. Because his Therenody was pushed, Reece based it with his Minotaur Warrior and then on his next turn pushed to Weapons Master. He rolled a 3, which was reduced to 2 clicks. Bob's Fell Reaper (healed to its second slot as mentioned before) then based the Minnow Warrior and dealt 3 clicks next turn. These two would stay engaged for the rest of the game, and the Fell Reaper*** eventually finished off the Minotaur. This left only Reece's Trollkiller as his only healthy attacker. He moved it towards Bob's Solo Channeler, and would eventually base it.

Reece's Trollkiller almost gave Bob a run for his money, but the Channeler made a crucial breakaway roll, and Therenody was in position to make a ranged combat attack against it, and the Nightmare Reaper would come in to help finish it off.
