At initial impressions the game looked fun, but repetitive sound and gameplay make you want to turn it off in a heartbeat.

Graphics
The hi-res Gex3 engine looks good, eventhough light-sourcing and special effects, which look good are minimal in the game.  The frame-rate lags at a slow 18-20 fps, not bad but not good either.  But, the 3D textures and models in this game are eye pleasing.   The worst (and I mean the worst) thing here is Akuji's animation...remember the old 8-bit NES games where cahracter animation was 8 positions?  This game will remind you of that very soon.  There is no transition from standing to turning around to jumping.  In addition, the jumping animation is brutal (the running is awful too...but check out that jump!)..in days where motion-capture studios abound, why things look this crappy is beyond me.  Add to that the fact that the game is in 3rd person perspective, and you can't help but notice how badly he moves.

Gameplay
In a genre where 3rd person game have evolved to give us excellent control and really make you feel in total control of your characters thoughts and moves (think Tomb Raider(s), Spyro, Metal Gear), Akuji is a throwback to frustration.  Using the analog stick, he runs only (NO walking -- what were they thinking?)..often causing the infamous "back-up, try-again" method at lineing up jumps, and even worse is the feeling of "Damn, I fell off again when he RAN off the edge." Don't expect good control.

Sound
Excellent voice-overs, bowel-wrenching midi voodoo beat (I think it's just 4 seconds of "voodoo beat" music repeated over and over until you die (so this is hell. eh?)...

Replay Value
This game doesn't deserve to be played more than once, i think it desn't even deserve to be played once.

The bottom line is that this game is "been there before, done that better".   The real pleasure of playing this game is the Kain 2 demo that comes with it.   If you have nothing better to do and all the games are rented out, then maybe you can consider renting it, but banish the thought of buying it.
