Beta Quest Secrets

I don't know if you've seen yet for yourself the abilities of the Beta Quest, but I was messing around today for the first time, seeing what I could find. Here's what I've experienced when playing in the days documented.

5/30/99 - Okay. I put in the code with my Gameshark anxiously awaiting what was to be in the start of the
Beta Quest. Putting in the code, I pressed start to start the game. The Nintendo logo flashed up there as usual and then, no title screen and it goes straight into Link standing in Hyrule field as an Adult. I hear Epona neigh and decide I should look for her.

Walking around I notice something--there are no trees, no plants, no anything. Not even a power bar, no icons what-so-ever. So upon hearing Epona at the start, I had the natural instinct to go to Lon Lon Ranch. So I ran Link up there and tried to enter. The game froze :(. Turned it off and started over.

I continued on my quest for Epona. I walked all around Hyrule Field and came upon nothing even close to a horse, nothing but the normal places of water, ect.

At the end of looking for my trusty horse, I was right by Gerudo Valley so I decided to venture in and investigate what was to be Gerudo Valley and hopefully Gerudo Fortress along with the Haunted Wasteland.

Upon walking into what was supposed to be Gerudo Valley, I saw what was a totally blank, white screen with music playing that plays when you're in the cutscenes with the Triforce (the holy sort-of music) along with Gerudo Valley flashing across the screen like normal. I saw the outline of a map that was black except for the normal yellow arrow showing where Link was. There was a little bit of what appeared to be textured ground with all white above it. My icons where back, but I couldn't see Link or use any of my buttons, except for the Start button to get to the Status Screens. I concluded I couldn't do anything, so I turned of the game to start over.

Turning my game back on for a third time, I was at the same place in Hyrule Field that Link started every time--right by the river by the Kakariko Village steps. I then remembered about The Wise Owl talking about a different Lost Woods with different music, so I thought it would be cool to check it out.

As Link ran across the dark terrain of what was Hyrule Field on a dark, overcast night, I was looking around for more new stuff on the way. No luck. I entered the hollow log leading to the bridge over the Lost Woods. But when I entered, all that came up was what looked like a field of grass, that had a wall that went back towards a point 2/3 of the way from the left-hand side of the screen, then back out at the same angle and off of the screen.

Again, like in Gerudo Valley, the same, holy music was playing... "Weird..." I thought to myself as I sat there in dismay for what seemed like 3 minutes, waiting for something to happen. Nothing did. I couldn't see anything except the field and the wall. No icons, no nothing. Not even a map. I turned the game off again, with an idea of where to go next.

While it took the time to get the game started, I thought to myself, "How else could I get into the Lost Woods." Then it came to me, "The Minuet of Forest!" I was ready to see, the missing Lost Woods. Link started out, and I whipped out my trusty Fairy Ocarina that was the Ocarina of Time when used... strange. I play the Minuet of Forest... it asked me if I want to go now and obviously, I said yes. I watched Link disappear into green sparkles and fly into the sky and the screen faded white. BHAM!! Brick wall. The game froze =\... back to the drawing board.

Staring off again, I had to think for a minute on what to do. Then it came to me--Kakariko Village. Little did I know, this was the basis of my newfound adventure through Hyrule, hehe. Walking up the steps to the village, I couldn't wait. I made Link roll--a cool echoing sound was made... "Cool" I thought to myself. I entered the village and the cut scene when the shadow spirit comes out of the grave was like it was going to play, but it didn't. I saw houses ablaze like in the cut scene, but no monster or anything came out.

The camera came back to Link facing the gate to the village. I saw my icons along with an outline of the map filled with black like the one in Gerudo Valley.

I decided to press start. Everything on the Status Screen was there: Medallions, songs, Stone of Agony, Gerudo Membership Card, Skulltula counter (at 0). But the Spiritual Stones weren't there (more on this in a little bit). I pressed around to the equipment screen. Everything there was gotten except for Gauntlets (the Goron's Bracelet still showed faded) but there was no Biggoron's Sword, only the Giant's Knife. I decided to give Link a new look and equipped him with a nifty Zora's Tunic, a Mirror Shield, Giant's Knife, and some funny (normal) looking Hover Boots.

Then came the Equip Items screen. Everything you could ever want in the game was there. From all arrows and spells to the Lens of Truth, everything. I noticed on the Deku Nuts and Deku Sticks the numbers: they both read 50. The Deku Sticks were faded so I decided to equip the Deku Nuts to a C-button.

Next was the Location screen. All of the locations were visible. My heart skipped a beat. I cursored over them all quikly to see if any new locations where visable. No luck =(. So I decided to get back to playing around in the perishing village.

I came out of the Start Menus and I had some instinct to turn around. BOOM!! There was Shiek!!!! I quickly ran up to her and I tried to talk to her using A like normal. It wouldn't work! I then went forward a little more to see if I wasn't close enough. I walked right through her!! She was just a spite, an unbounderied polygon. "Well crap... have to find someone else to talk to" I said to myself.

I walked back into the village and I saw a tree. I went up to it and I instinctively used my Giant's Knife and slashed at the tree. I hit the tree, making a normal wood striking sound but right after that I saw something and heard something I hadn't expected! I had hit an invisible Cucco! It crowed at me like it got mad, but it didn't move. I thought "I'm gonna beat the crap outta this stupid bird." I wacked the bird with my sword a few more times, hitting the tree a few times still too. But then unexpectedly, my damn Giant's Knife broke. "Good for nothing fat Gorons. Can't make swords worth a s$#@ anymore." I said. I decided the Cucco wasn't going to kill me so I switched back to the Master Sword to go explore the town some more.

Walking around the village some more, I thought it would be cool to go into a house. I went into the Archary Range minigame. After entering, I saw my icons but in the distance I saw what looked like the first room of the Treasure Chest game in the Market as a kid. I couldn't move or anything. *click* Time to start over.

Back in the dark Hyrule Field, I was bound to find something better to do. Then I had an idea. The Market! Let's go to the Temple of Time and become a kid! I walked up to the drawbridge, it was up. "Up as an Adult?! It should be broken!" So I knew I was cool and knew how to get in there, so I turned off the game to put in the Moonjump code.

Appearing in Hyrule Field after putting in the code, I ran up to the drawn up drawbridge. I pressed L and began liftoff. After getting over the bridge, I dropped down inside. The screen faded into the center, but the fade was kind of scratch... it's hard to explain. Ok, the boundaries between the black and the picture were rough and not smooth and faded like normal. But anyways, I was surprised to find myself in the Goron City Shop!! With bombs and stuff lacing the wall, I went up and talked to the Goron at the counter. He said the normal stuff but I tried to buy something (Goron Tunic). The Goron said I couldn't have it right now. So I decided to try somoething else, a Red Potion. Badabing-badaboom, it worked. I bought the potion and then I noticed something I hadn't noticed before--no icons or rupees visible. Hmmm... ok.

I proceeded to leave, expecting to find myself in Goron City, but instead, I was warped to the Castle Courtyard to find Zelda standing by her window facing me while I was at the enterance!! I quickly walked up to her, me being an adult and her still being a child, I was anxious to hear what she had to say to me. I ran up there only to find I could use Z to use an invisible selector thing to lock-on to her, but it wouldn't let me talk to her! What a bunch of crap.

Well I looked around for a little bit longer and decided nothing was of importance there so I left, thinking I'd find myself in the courtyard with the guards, but instead, I was in for another warp! Link appeared in the Back Alley with the old man and two doors on the left, the Bombchu Shop and the lady's house who's dog's name is Richard. So I decided to go visit the fat lady and see if she was in need of a dog.

I opened the door and of course as you guessed it, I wasn't where I should've been. I ended up in Impa's House, with two guys and the Cucco Girl that gives you the bottle. I talked to them, nothing out of the ordinary. I decided to leave this place and let these normal people get back to their normal lives. As I left, I didn't know where I would end up next. The Market, Lake Hylia, I didn't know. But unfortunatly, the game froze after I exited that house. Now that was an adventure... let's see where another place can lead us in Kakariko Village.

I ran into Kakariko Village as fast as I could, rolling to hear the cool sound up the stairs of course. I went into the house with the Cucco in the box next to it. It was a shop, one that I didn't quite recognize but I knew I'd seen before. I thought "This is stupid" so I left. I came out in the Market! "Suite!!" I thought. Off to the Temple of Time I thought.

Walking into the Temple of Time, I noticed the Spiritual Stones (this is what I was talking about earlier with the Spiritual Stones not being there) sitting in their holes like normal after becoming an adult. But the Triforce above the Door of Time was not lit up and the Door of Time was still sealed. I thought I'd get put the Master Sword back into the Pedestal of Time and become a kid and see what's there! I walked Link up the the alter and pulled out my Ocarina of Time and played the Song of Time...

The regular stuff happened where the Spiritual Stones should've been, but nothing appeared and they screen kind of followed where the Spiritual Stones would've been had I even had them. I watched as the Triforce lit up and the Door of Time opened. I walked around the alter and went into the Pedestal of Time chamber. Surprisingly, the cut scene when Link first comes back from the Chamber of Sages after talking to Rauru for the first time is playing, only there is no blue light. I wasn't that excited because I knew what was going on since I had experienced this before, using TriforceGuy's "Triforce Glitch".

I thought I was going to get to talk to Shiek, but when the text for Navi started to scroll, the game didn't display any text and the first character of text came up as a scrambled blue box and the game froze. It's never fun to start over, especially when you've gotten so far. That's when I decided it was time to call it a day. Until the next update! Stay tuned.

5/31/99 - After updating last night, I persisted to play around with this wonderful find by The Wise Owl. I knew I had at least 2 or 3 places I could go: On the way to Zora's Domain and Lake Hylia.

I came upon the conclusion to go to Lake Hylia first, since I wanted to see what it looked like, or where it lead me. It took a long time to travel there by foot (makes you really take for granted Epona).

After entering the entrance to Lake Hylia, I found myself in Dodongo's Cavern in the room with the two firebats and the block you need to pull off the cliff onto the button in the middle of the room to open the door to the room right above the Giant Dodongo. I moonjumped up to the ledge that would be otherwise out of jumping range, and pushed the block off of the ledge and onto the button. I entered the now unlocked door.

I then found myself watching the cut scene of Link coming into Queen Gomah's throne room (the boss of Inside the Deku Tree). I thought, "Oh no. I don't have any Deku Nuts or even a Slingshot. Can't get to my start menu... hmmm...". I tried shooting Queen Gomah when her eye turned red with my arrows--it didn't work. Tried bombs, but it came to no avail. I kept shooting arrows, seeing if I could get a lucky hit but no.

Being frustrated, I ran away from Queen Gomah. She then proceeded to climb up the wall like normal. I thought I'd be slick and try and shoot her down from the celing. I watched and waited for her eye to turn red--which was kind of hard to see since I was viewing her from the side. Her I turned red and I whipped out my bow and fired a single arrow. Direct Hit! Knocked her straight to the ground, stunned. I ran up to the baffled beast and slashed her to death with my trusty Master Sword.

The Queen dematerialized and a Heart Container along with the blue warp portal appeared. I picked up the Heart Container and thought for a second: "Every other time the screen has been made to turn white, the game has froze. I wonder if it'll happen when I go through the portal." Running up to the portal, I entered it not knowing what was to beheld. The cut scene started like normal and Link became limp and floated upward...

The screen turned white and I had expected it to freeze, but to my dismay, it didn't! Link was free-floating inside of the portal. I pressed L to see if he would go up farther, but Link stayed in his spot. I then held the analog stick forward and Link began to slightly move. I pressed B to swing Link's Master Sword and he did, but stayed at the same speed. Link kept floating until he hit the wall and that shot him back across the room into the wall on the other side. I couldn't control him. He slowly moved along the wall until he got to a crevis. I couldn't move and Link wouldn't move on his own anymore. Ok, that was fun. Let's try something else.

Starting back off in my normal spot, I decided it was time to go the other way, to Zora's River. Getting there much faster this time, I entered and Link appeared next in Zora's Fountain where Jabu-Jabu is! Jabu-Jabu as an adult?! Ok! I decided to look around first though.

I heard a weird gleaming sound, like that of when you're in the Temple of Time next to the alter? Well I looked around and sure enough! I found Zora's Saphire under water! I also found Princess Ruto, but yet again, I couldn't talk to her or anything like that. I tried diving down and getting Zora's Saphire but I couldn't get deep enough since there was no way to equip my Iron Boots and I only had a Silver Scale. Forget that idea.

I decided it was time to venture into the gread abbys of the fishy-fish we know by the name of Jabu-Jabu. Going inside, the name of the place "Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly" flashed across with a room in the distance. But before I could do anything, I was transported to the room where you fight the octopus thing for the first time with the gleaming of a Spiritual Stone still present somewhere.

I left the room through a door and I saw the room where you see Ruto after falling through the hole the first time. I saw one of those large electrical tentical things on my left so I went down to the right. There was the space for a door, but the door was disoriented and moved over to the left. I decided to go through it.

After going through the door, I started dropping down, falling out of control. I then pressed L to save myself from the pit of dispair. I floated up for a while and saw my position the level map change. I pressed start really quick to see where I was. I was on the outside of the room and the space on the map outside of the level was flashing! I decided to make my way over to the boundaries of the room and see if I could land somewhere. Dropping down, I came upon a room, but the floor wasn't textured so I couldn't walk on it. Floated into the hole on my left and found myself facing the Jabu-Jabu boss!

I thought again, "Can't get to my start menu and the only way to defeat this boss is by using the Boomarang." Well, I tried everything and couldn't get anything to hurt the electric monster. So, I comited suicide to see what would happen. It asked me if I wanted to save, I said yes... nothing different. "Do I want to continue playing?" I selected no, figuring yes would keep me fighting the monster. It took me back to the starting point.

BUT see, I later got an e-mail from Fortunata6@aol.com telling me that if you die and select yes, that it takes you to a different place! Fortunata claims he go to Gerudo Fortress! So now, try dying everywhere and see if we can't get to someplace cool!

Then I remembered, the Ice Caverns, yea! I made my way back to Jabu-Jabu's place and proceeded to enter the Ice Caverns.

Upon entering, I was in the room where you get the Iron Boots. There was a red-crystal platform that I couldn't find a purpose for, a door leading out of the room, and a little hole to go down that had water and a door in it. I tried the underwater door. I couldn't, yet again, get to my start menu so I couldn't strap on my heavy Iron Boots. So I went through the door. I was still in the Ice Caverns, not exactly sure where.

Wondered around for a bit and decided there wasn't anything cool there, so I went back into the door I came through. It took me to the cut scene where Ganon falls down the first time and Zelda is freed from the crystal!! She comes down and says something, but then it froze!

Now, I tried dying at Queen Gohma and it took me to the Gerudo Training Grounds. I wanted to see more, so I left the Training Grounds quickly and I ended up at the enterance to the Haunted Wasteland from Gerudo Fortress. I entered the Wasteland, I couldn't wait. After going through, I was in the bottom level of the room where you fight Ganondorf with the pillar. Looked around for a door and found one and went through it all while the castle was crumbling down. Next Link was in one of the Great Fairy Fountains, I'm not sure which one. I walked up to the Triforce on the floor and played Zelda's Lullaby--nothing happened so I left.

I appeared in the Thieves' Hideout in the room where you can rescure the carpenter Ichiro. I successfully rescued him and went out the door on the opposite side of where I came in. Now I came out of the enterance to the Training Grounds! This is getting weirder and weirder. Then I got an idea... go into Gerudo Valley from the other side!! I ran down to the enterance and went through. It took me back to the same enterance I came out of! Then I tried going into another one of the enterances to Thieves' Hideout, but then the game froze into like 20,239,238 colors, so I turned it off. Whew!

Next update, look for more confusing tales of when I die and come back to life in a different place!

I hope you liked my little, well long actually, detailed description of what I encountered while playing with the Beta Quest. I know you'd like to see some of this stuff for yourself, so go ahead and try it and e-mail me your results if they're something you've done different than I've described here. Until next time!
