On 11-NOV-01, we took little Bill to Primary Children's Medical Center because he was fussy, running a slight fever, and had a big lump developing on the left side of his neck, under his left ear.
After examination, they decided to take blood and urine samples, do a spinal tap, and admit him to the hospital. They started him on an I.V. of antibiotics (clindomycin and gentomycin), etc. On 12-NOV-01 they performed an ultrasound examination of the lump on his neck, and finally on Monday evening they discharged him with a diagnosis of "intramuscular fibromatosis coli of the sternocleidomastoid", apparently otherwise known colloquially as a "wry neck", and it is a benign tumor or cyst in the neck muscle.
We are supposed to perform a fairly simply regimen of Physical Therapy to ensure that he doesn't lose range of motion in his neck (i.e., develop torticollis). Otherwise, there is no other treatment scheduled, and my understanding is that it will "spontaneously resolve" within a year or two.
