Recovering Spells

To recover spells, you need to sleep continuously for 8 hours. If this sleep is interrupted, then it’s not all wasted but an additional hour of sleep is needed for each interruption. Once the sleep is completed, one hour must be spent studying your spell books. If you don’t have your spell books, the only spell you can cast is Read Magic.

Learning new spells

There are several ways to learn a new spell. One way is by going up a level. Every time you gain a magic user level, you can select 2 spells to attempt to learn. Your chance to learn depends on the school of the spell. If it’s Evocation, Abjuration, or Necromancy, then you have no chance to learn it. If it’s Enchantment or Illusion, then you automatically learn it. If it’s anything else, then your chance to learn it is a Spellcraft check vs a DC of 20+2*(the level of the spell). You can take 10 on this check but you can’t take 20. You can’t retry until you gain a point of intelligence.

Another way to learn a spell is off of a scroll. Once you figure out what spells are on the scroll, you can choose to learn the spell (same chance as above) to put it into your spell book. When you copy the spell into your spell book (see below), the spell disappears from the scroll.

Another way to learn a spell is to research it. Researching a spell costs 500 gold pieces per spell level and takes 5 days per spell level. You also must typically be located in a community with a population of at least 8000 (to gain access to unusual items and books). The chance to learn the spell with this method is the same as when gaining a level. Once you have successfully researched a spell, you still have to write it into your spell book (see below).
------------------------------------------
Putting new spells into spellbooks

To cast a spell, it has to be in the spell books that you study. After you learn a spell, you can write it into your spell book. It costs 200 gold pieces per spell level (100 gp for a 0 level spell) and takes 1 day plus 1 day per spell level to write a spell into your book. Note that the gold piece cost must typically be made in a community with a population of at least 500 (to gain access to certain materials). If the spell was learned because you went up a level, then it doesn’t cost anything (or take any time) to place into your spell book (it’s assumed you were working on it the whole time you were going up a level). If you want to make a backup copy of your spell books, the costs in gold and time are halved. Each spell takes 2 pages per level of the spell (a 0 level spell takes 1 page). Each spell book has 100 pages in it.

Identifying magic items

To identify a magic item, the most straight forward method is to use magic. Detect Magic, Identify, and Analyze Dweamor will each give varying degrees of information.

A Knowledge (Arcana) check vs DC 30 can give you some information on any magic item in your possession. You can take 10 or 20 for this check as normal.

Other skill checks can be attempted depending on the particular magic item. For example, Spellcraft vs DC 20+(the level of the spell) is used for scrolls, and Profession (Herbalist) vs DC 30 is used for potions.
