WHAT IS COMPUTER

A computer is simply an electronic processing machine that processes data to give information.

Data is a set of facts or numbers like Sam scored 300 marks. Data is not useful until you convert it into information by processing it, say by comparing it or adding it. So by comparing Sam's score with Vineet's score of 400, You get the information

Sam scored less than Vineet.

APPLICATION OF COMPUTERS

  1. Desktop publishing (DTP).
  2. Developing Software.
  3. Using software like MS-Word to format text, write letters etc.
  4. Communicating with other computers e.g. Internet

    TYPES OF COMPUTERS

Broadly the computers are divided into following types:
    1. Mainframe Computers
    2. Mini Computers
    3. Micro Computers

      Mainframe Computers:

These are expensive, large, centralized computer facilities where a supercomputer (like CRAY or PARAM or CYBER) or a large computer like the DEC-10 is connected to several terminals. A multi-user mainframe computer has a large memory and capable of speed of the order of several billions of floating point operations per seconds.

      Mini Computers:

These are also multi-user computers comparatively operating at slower speeds and lesser memory. In the mini computer category are extremely popular DEC-10, PDP-11 of the Digital Equipment Corporation

      Micro Computers:

These are based on standard microprocessor marked by Intel, Motorola etc. micro computer are often called personal computers or PC since they were originally intended to be single user device either at home or office.
