Abacus was the first mechanical computer that was used to add numbers

. In 1642 Blaise Pascal developed a mechanical computing device called the adding machine. Then in 19th century Charles Babbage conceived of analytical engine.

First electromechanical computer was Mark-1 developed by Howard Aiken in 1944 and capable of basic arithmetic operations.

The first generation computers were used extensively to calculate projectile trajectories which otherwise took two years to calculate.
