Kathak was initially performed in the temples, in praise of the Lord. With the advent of Mughals, Kathak was introduced in the King's durbar, thus moving this art from devotion to entertainment. The influence of the Mughals is evident in the costumes designed for the performance.

Kathak has two major techniques. They are Nritha, meaning pure dance, and Abhinav, meaning expressions. The predominant styles of the dance are the intricate miniature paintings. This form of Dance is performed by both men and women.

Tina Deole
Tina's pursuit for learning Kathak has indeed brought her a long way.

Born and brought up in Indore, she started her initial training in the dance from
Mrs. Ranjana Thakur and later under Dr. Mrs. Suchitra Harmalkar.

During those formative years in Indore, she created a strong platform for herself on the educational front. Tina is a Nritya Alankar in Kathak from
Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Mumbai, a Diploma that she acquired after nine years of rigorous hard work. She went on todo her M.A. in Classical Dance (Kathak) from Devi Ahilya Vishvavidyalaya, Indore, in which she stood first on the merit list. She is receiving scholarship from Govt. of India for doing advance studies in Kathak.

Besides her training in Kathak, Tina has beautifully blended her education by pursuing a B.Sc. Degree and later adding a Diploma in Interior Designing from DAVV in her qualification. She is an avid artiste with a flair for fine arts. The entire gamut of interests and talents make Tina a true artiste with integral personality.

Tina's pursuit to learn the finer nuances of the art form has now brought her to
Smt. Uma Dogra. Umaji is a Kathak exponent, a valuable product of the Jaipur Gharana. She is the Gandabandh Shaagird of the great kathak maestro, Late Pt. Durgalalji. Tina is currently in Mumbai, taking her training from Umaji, who is one of the most renowned Gurus of our time.
