Pinhoti Trail Journal
(Sessions #1 & #2, March 1998)

Saturday, March 7, 1998:
11:25 a.m. started hiking.  Hiked about one mile, then had to take boots
and socks off to cross a swollen creek.  A lot of trees down.  Averaged
1.5 mi/hr (took 4 hours to hike 6 miles to Hwy 94).  Cool bridge crossing
at Terrapin Creek (during part of trail that used an old railroad bed).
(It was an old R.R. bridge converted for hiking.)  Weather was drizzly
all day. At 5:30 p.m., set up camp near small stream.  Woke up at 4:30
a.m. with tent in 3 inches of water.  Tent was holding, but, we decided to
get up and move the tent about 10 ft. up a hill.  (Another Thunderstorm
ensued soon after.)

Sunday, March 8, 1998:
8:45 a.m. started hiking.  RAIN, RAIN, RAIN!!!  Thunderstorms!  Half of
our clothes are wet.  All of our socks are wet.  Multiple trees down and
swollen creeks.  We are only covering about 1 mile per hour.  SLOW!
Crossed 4 knee-deep, COLD, swollen creeks so far this trip (sans boots and  socks).  Late in day, big T-storms...everything wet.

Monday, March 9, 1998:
8:45 a.m. started hiking.  It was 36 degrees when we woke up at 7 a.m.
I (Tina) am very cold and wet and I am having to walk around to keep
warm (before the hike).  Coleman has unusual optimism about getting
things dry and having a good day.  All hopes were soon dashed with light
rain in a.m. changing to intermittent sleet and snow.  Had to cross another
swollen creek (number 5) without boots and socks (Cold!).  Stopped for lunch    (after climbing Dugger Mountain).  We had to set up the tent due to sleet and  high, gusty winds.  After eating, we took a short nap (hoping to wait out the sleet).  At 1:30 p.m., we noticed that the sleet was starting to stick. The temp had dropped to 32 degrees.  We were OK at that moment, but, we made a few phone calls (with the cell phone) to find out that the low temps were going to be in the mid-teens the next couple of nights.  With everything wet and knowing we were just 3 miles from a major road, we decided to do the safe thing and bug out.  We took down the tent and got back on the trail about 2:30 p.m.  We got to the road at about 4:15 p.m. Thanks to Jim Vice (Coleman's father) for saving us and bringing us chocolate!!!  He picked us up on Co. Rd. 55 at 4:30 p.m.

We shall return!!!
