Shankly Despotism was recorded in April 2003 and released two days later. All of Side One was recorded in Robert's basement, and Side Two, with the exception of "Speak Kindly" was recorded in various places around Matt's house. Only ten copies were made, each with the message "LISTEN TO THE POGUES" written by hand on the inside sleeve. This was the first release to officially bear the Tin Can Records logo. Both "Speak Kindly" and "Fuzzy The Bear" were written and recorded within five minutes as filler tracks. They turned out to be best songs on the album. That says a lot.
