Hadandawah Dance

The Hadandawah (plural for Hadandawi) is a tribe in Eastern Sudan in Africa. Together with other tribes such as the Bani-Amir they form the greater Beja tribe. The painting illustrates one of their traditional dances. In this dance, two men take on an act of a sword and shield challenge, in which they jump high hitting each other’s shields. The Beja tribe played a great role in the struggle against the colonisation of Sudan.
