Chapter one: Spiral Staircase

“Remember children, humans are evil.” The tall, thin lady said pointing a
finger.
One of them raised their hands.
“What is it, Murdoc?”
“Why are they evil, Auntie Christa?”
“Because, sweet Murdoc, they managed to confine us in this hell that we call home. That is why we hate them all.”
Another child raised her hand.
“What is it, Bethen?”
“Why do they hate our race so much?”
“Because, Bethen, we are stronger than them, we are smarter than them, and,
we are more alert than them.”
“At least some of us are.” A child named Geist blurted and pointed at
Murdoc.
“Now Geist, just because Murdoc was injected with human D.N.A, doesn’t mean
you can make fun of him.”
“But he’s not all demon!!” Bethen stated.
“Yes we know, Bethen.”
Murdoc looked at the floor, his eyes beginning to tear.

“Aww, is the little human sitting by himself again!?” Geist said as he
looked at Murdoc with hatred, for being different.
Murdoc looked up at him, his eyes lighted up.
“You disgust me!” Geist said as he slapped Murdoc across the face.
Murdoc stayed in the position he was in after he was slapped, and held
his hand to where he had been hit.
“He wasn’t even born from a demon, labs created him.” Bethen said, pointing
and laughing.
Murdoc couldn’t take it anymore, so he ran from all of them, and didn’t
stop.
“Keep running, Princeton, keep running!!” Geist yelled.

13 Years Later...

‘I am not a human, nor am I a demon .. I was created by human scientists .. I was created not to show emotion, and yet I show emotions .. I was nothing at one point, then I became a demon through D.N.A., then they injected me with human D.N.A. .. why though?’ Murdoc kept thinking as he lay in bed, staring at his padded ceiling. There was a knock on the door.
“Come in.”
“All right, Mr. Princeton, you are being discharged, I feel you have regained your senses.” The doctor said as flipped through his papers.
Murdoc sat up, his long silver like hair cascading over his shoulders, and shot a glance at the doctor.
“Didn’t you hear me? You’re free to go!!” The doctor said a little louder.
Murdoc got up, and put his possessions in his suitcases.

He stepped out of the hospital, for the first time in 2 years. He’d never
really opened his door to the outside world, knowing that he was different.
The first thing that he thought was, ‘Hunger’, so he asked a person sitting
at a bus stop where the nearest diner was.
“I believe it’s on Maple Street.” The stranger responded.
“Thank you.” Murdoc said as he walked away.
Murdoc had no idea where Maple Street was, so he continued to walk in circles. He finally stopped at video rental shop, and asked for directions.
“Maple Street? You must be new here,” The girl at the counter stated. “My
name is Leela, I’ll help you in any way I can!”
“Just directions to the diner.” He said in is usual sad sounding voice.
She stopped smiling, and looked at him with concern. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I’m just hungry.”
“Well, ok, just take a right, and you’ll hit Maple Street.” Leela said
pointing right.
“Thank you.”
Leela watched as the stranger walked away, and watched as her friend Nydi
walked in.
“Hey Lee! What’s up?” She said walking up to the counter.
Leela shrugged, “Nothing, same ol’, same ol’.”
“Who was that guy that just walked out? New boyfriend?”
Leela blushed, “No, just some guy who walked in here for directions. He
seemed kinda upset about something.”
“Who knows, who cares.”
‘I might ..’ Leela thought.

‘Ah shit!!’ Leela thought as she ran towards the book shop where she worked majority of the time. ‘I’m gonna be so late!!!’
She took a right, and bumped into someone.
“So sorry! Gonna be late! Must go!” She said quickly before she looked up at the person. Then, she stepped back, noticing it was the same man from the video store.
“Hey! You’re the same guy from the store! Did you make it to the diner?” She asked, dusting herself.
“Yes, thank you.”
“You’re welcome, what’s your name anyway, stranger?” She said looking up at him.
“Murdoc.”
“Interesting name, well, I’ll be seeing ya, if I don’t get to work in-” She paused and looked at her watch. “You know what? I better go now, or else I’m screwed, bye!” She said running towards the book shop.

‘What did she mean by, “I’ll be seeing you.”? Does that mean I’ll see more of her? Why did she say that?’ Murdoc thought as he continued to walk towards, well, no where really.
He had no home, and he didn’t have an apartment. So, he slept in an alley for one night, and decided to look for an apartment the following day.
He got up the next morning, at the usual time, 11:00 A.m., and looked for an apartment.
“And remember, if I hear one complaint about your behavior, you’re outta here for good!” The owner of the apartment complex said as he handed the keys to his apartment.
Murdoc looked for his apartment, and finally found it.
‘Was that woman a fortune teller?’ He thought.
“Gonna take my laundry to the washroom, gonna scrub all the dirt out of my clothes,” Leela sang as she walked down the hall with clothes she had worn the past week. “Gonna check the dryer for lint, so that way it don’t explode.” She usually closed her eyes when she sang, so she didn’t notice the man in front of her.
“Oops, sorry.” She said as she knelt down to pick up her clothes.
“It’s all right.” The man said as he looked for his key.
Leela looked at him and noticed it was Murdoc.
“Hey! dude with the interesting name! I remember you!” She said excited.
“You’re the lady from the video store.”
“Leela, my name’s Leela,” she said as she stood up. “You movin’ in here?”
Murdoc nodded.
“Cool! I live like, a couple of places down from you, we’re, sorta like neighbors I guess.”
‘How did she know we were meeting again?’
“Well, I guess I’ll be seein’ ya!” Leela said as she continued down the hall.
‘L'aliéné ..’ Murdoc thought.

Back!
