Anything For The Girl

Commentary
This image is a romantic
Tour de Force, and a slight departure from the more cerebral work typical of
this artist. Stick-Man fights through the four basic elements of the universe
in a dogged attempt to reach his real goal – the ethereal Female represented by
the Picasso-esque facial features floating above the brick wall. Representing
the elements are: Air : Flying Arrows (of outrageous fortune, perhaps?), Water
: A Thunderstorm, The Earth : A grounded Alligator, and Fire : Fire. Through it
all, he maintains a calm reminiscent of Michelangelo’s David. He
is resilient, and focused on the task at hand. A sappier decision would have
been to have him gazing up at the Lady. AK avoids this easy sentimentality.
This is a Working Man’s hero, not a Lute-playing fop. He has work to do, and
won’t turn his attention to his desires until his responsibilities are accomplished.
The background yellow color reinforces the emotional dynamic of the image, for yellow
represents love, affection, desire and sympathy. This is the classic Romantic
hero, not meaning in love, but meaning undying devotion to a worthy cause in
the face of great difficulty. For further interesting images, you need go no
further than this
kind of Romanticism’s greatest painter, Eugene Delacroix.
