In Loving Memory of

Wesley Marks

January 8th, 1969  -  July 15th, 2004

Wes Marks philosophy on coaching was simple – Work as hard as you can, support your team, and actively go after the things you want without stopping until you reach your goals.  His tough love approach produced a blue collared discipline within his players who persevered through his workouts.  In Wes’ mind, talent could only take you so far and could be overlooked very easily if your effort was sub par.  He sought for players to demand the best out of themselves by seeking an active and catalyst-type role in a game as well as for teammates to demand the maximum efforts from each other.  Players who thrived under Coach Wes made others around them better with one eye on their own determination to succeed and the other carefully concerned with the overall team performance.

On July 15th, 2004 Wes' life was tragically cut short when he suffered a torn Aorta Artery and heart attack while working at his office of his beloved Cupertino restaurant, 'Bruchettas' which he owned and operated since 1999.  He passed on almost instantaneously.  Wes and Jeff coached together for nearly 6 years beginning with a U14 team in the West San Jose Region of AYSO and continuing as head JV and Varsity coaches, respectively, at Cupertino High School.  He and I shared a very similar vision and love of pursuing athletic excellence in the academic environment where so many life lessons are learned.  He was a coach, a mentor, an entrepreneur, and a very good friend.

In honor of Wes' memory, we have set up a scholarship fund in his name at Cupertino HS.   With generous help from Wes' family, two $5000 scholarships will be given away each year beginning with the spring of 2005.  If you would like to contribute to the scholarship fund please send checks directly to Cupertino High School.
