Assateague Island State Park
Maryland
 In the Atlantic Ocean
In the Atlantic Ocean

Assateague Island is a barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean. Most of
it is in Maryland, but the most famous part is in Virginia, near the town
of Chincoteague, where wild horse are rounded up annually and sent swimming
across the sound. Most of the island is a federal wildlife refuge with
recreational facilities in both states. Maryland has a state park that
offers camping right on the dunes next to the beach--where we stayed.

 Our Campsite

If you look carefully, you can see part of an orange late model VW camper
in the background (towards the left).

  Another VW in the Campground
This is a nice scene: a Beetle at a beach campground with an umbrella
tent. The brush in the background is where we saw a deer after Teddy randomly
shined a flashlight in there one night. During the day we saw lots
of wild horses walking around the campground.

  Birds on the Beach

Sort of on the beach...There's a bird resting on each pole. These are seagulls.
We saw several varieties of seagulls. We also saw numerous pelicans, too.
The beach here is a lot nicer than at nearby Ocean City. The sand is a
little softer here, it's not as crowded, and it's deserted after supper,
except for the birds--as in this picture.
