Falls Lake, North Carolina

Falls Lake Dam

Falls Lake Dam, just north of Raleigh, actually within its suburbs, is 92 feet high and 1915 feet wide. The spillway is a neat place to go after a lot of rain because then a mad rush of turbulent water pours out the bottom and into the Neuse River. A lot of sightseers show up under those conditions. It's kind of like Wayne and Garth laying on the hood of their car at the end of the runway watching the planes take off.
Bootcamp at Falls Lake
Bootcamp?
We were the only group in the camping area this quiet weekday morning in June. Falls Lake is normally very peaceful this early in the morning, but this crowd was up doing their exercises. You can see different levels of enthusiasm among the participants. I think a few of the younger ones are still trying to figure out what they've gotten themselves into!

NOTE: Ted is the only one not in the picture because he took the picture, but some participants are partially obscured by others, and for one little girl in particular, only her left knee, elbow, and forearm are visible. Can you find her? Family members may request a larger (400 Kb) picture via e-mail.

Falls Lake is an Army Corps of Engineers project. The State of North Carolina manages the recreational areas. For more information on the recreational area, go to its webpage, or get a map (in adobe format), or see the North Carolina State Park Info Page for something about all of North Carolina's state parks.
