North Bend Park, Kerr Lake
Virginia

Kerr Lake
Kerr Lake
Kerr Lake is another Corps of Engineers project. Kerr Lake crosses the North Carolina-Virginia state line. Although much of the lake is actually within North Carolina, the dam and North Bend Park are in Virginia. The water was unusually low. You can see the exposed ground in the photo above. It's reflecting a reddish tint from the rising sun.
John H. Kerr Dam

This is a large dam, built out of concrete, with a highway (VA-4) going across the top. The rectangular building at the top is a hydroelectric power plant. On weekdays visitors can look in through the observation windows. North Bend Park, where we camped, is just up the left fork of the road leaving the top of the photo.

Our overflowing camper
Our Camper is Overflowing!
We are outgrowing our trusty VW camper. It's overflowing! After one or two more trips this fall, it's going up for sale. Are you interested in a reliable VW camper? It has accomodations for four and is ideal for a couple or a small family. Send me e-mail...

Campesite
Our Campsite

North Bend park has plenty of campsites. It's operated directly by the Army Corps of Engineers. The staff is very friendly. We had a nice conversation with one of the rangers and the entrance staff was very helpful. The sites follow a format typical of Corps facilities: lamppost, metal fire-ring, table, and a flat gravel area outlined by timbers. North Bend sites include very convenient cooking/cleaning tables, too.
Cathy, Michael, and their Jeep
Cathy, Michael, and their Jeep
We met my sister, Cathy, and her husband, Michael, at the campground. Here they are with their Jeep. The kids enjoyed riding around with them.
Our new cook
Our New Cook
Now that we have Tommy (the baby) with us, our usual cook is preoccupied. Now she's our new photographer. I never knew how much fun cooking could be. It feels good when everyone likes what you fixed for them. Too bad it's usually the other way...
