Robbie Elliott Stats Squad No. 7 Born: Newcastle (25.12.73) Height: 5'10" Weight: 10st 13lbs Playing Position: Full Back/Midfield/Central Defence Previous Club: Newcastle Utd. Trotters Debut: v Southampton (August 1997) Profile Robbie Elliott became the Wanderers record signing when they paid £2.5 million to bring him to The Reebok Stadium in July 1997. He is capable of playing in either the left full back position, on the left side of midfield or in central defence. He has good tackling and passing ability and was signed professional by Newcastle in April 1991. He made his League debut the previous month, appearing in a second division reverse at Middlesbrough. He went on to win both England youth and two under 21 caps despite the early part of his career being dogged by injury. He grabbed his first goal for The Magpies in a 3-1 win at Leicester on the opening day of the 1994/95 season. He made his debut for the Wanderers in the opening day of the 1997/98 season at Southampton in Bolton's 1-0 win. Unfortunately he broke his leg on his home debut of that season against Everton. He seemed to have made an excellent recovery and was fit to tour with the squad in Ireland pre-season, making one appearance. His road to recovery hit a major setback when he suffered tendinitis and did not play again until coming on in a reserves match at Grimsby for 25 minutes. He had unsure start to last season but has found favour with manager Sam Allardyce playing a midfield role. Scored the winner in the Wanderers 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Worthington Cup 4th round. Further bad luck hit the midfielder when he had to undergo an operation for a double hernia. Came back and winning the plaudits with performances in the centre of midfield. Has also been playing in the left full back berth. This season, the geordie has recovered from his injury, and as Mike Whitlow is injured, Robbie has settled in at Left-Back, and if his versitility is needed, he can go in at midfileld. |
