Profile

Capable of playing either at right back or in central defence Gudni Bergsson is a player of vast international experience. He began his career with Valur before making a £100,000 move to Tottenham Hotspur in December 1988. He played 71 League games for Spurs. A back injury forced him out of the game and he returned to Iceland. While back home he completed his law studies.

Gudni joined the Wanderers in 1995 after a trial period. He made his debut as a substitute in the 1995 Coca Cola Cup final against Liverpool and has since proved a snip for his total £115,000 fee. He captained the Wanderers to the first division championship last season and won his 75th international cap for Iceland in July 1997.

The season 1999/2000 is the last year of his current contract but has consistently refused to speculate on his future, saying he would make his mind up towards the end of the season. Had injury problems at the start of the season but playing solidly in the heart of the defence.

Gudni can look back on the season with considerable pride tinged with the disappointment that he was unable to play in a prestigious final in what might be his last season at the Wanderers. He is still considering his future.

At the start of July Gudni returned from thinking over his future at home in Iceland and, to the delight of manager Sam Allardyce, signed a one year contract with the Wanderers.
