Jussi Jaaskelainen Stats Squad No.15 Born: Mikkeli (19.04.75) Height: 6'3" Playing Position: Goalkeeper Previous Club: VPS (Vaasan Pallo Seura) International Caps: Finland under-21 Profile Jaaskelainen signed in November 1997 for an initial £100,000, which could rise to £350,000. A junior international in Finland, he had been watched at national level by ex-manager Colin Todd and snapped up by Wanderers after he had a trial with Norwich. Jussi's full international debut came in March 1998 when he kept a clean sheet in the country's 2-0 win in Malta. He was on the bench for the Wanderers on a number of occassions last season and made his breakthrough during the club's pre-season tour of Ireland. He has grown in confidence while standing in for Keith Branagan. The Wanderer's regular choice keeper is now fit again but the big Finn continues to get the nod from Colin Todd. It will be interesting to watch the competition for the number 1 jersey unfold. Jussi, by his own admission, had trouble settling in Bolton when he first came over. But he believes that is in the past and is very happy. He and his partner celebrated the birth of a son at the start of the season. After a dip in his confidence in the 1998/99 season and losing his place to Steve Banks he has fought his way back and is current holder of the keeper's jersey. Will look back at the 1999/2000 season with pride in his personal development as he won plaudits from the management team for his progress and in particular his improved kicking. |
